As classic car auctions, collector car sales and international vehicle auctions pick up around the world, one question matters just as much as the winning price: how are you getting the car home?

Before you bid internationally, keep these three things in mind:

1. Know the landed cost before you bid.
International car shipping costs can include vehicle collection, RORO or container shipping, customs clearance, duties, taxes and final delivery. Having an estimate upfront helps you set a smarter bidding limit.

2. Check import eligibility for your destination.
Vehicle import rules vary by country. Age restrictions, emissions standards, safety requirements and registration rules can all affect whether a vehicle can be imported legally.

What actually happens when your car lands at a North American port.
Customs clearance for an imported car, in plain words.

Before the vessel arrives, the entry is filed. Bill of sale, title and vehicle details go in ahead of time, so the car is expected.

When the vessel docks, the car is discharged and held at the terminal until it is released. This is where paperwork errors cost days, so it is worth getting right the first time.

Duties and taxes are assessed and paid. In the US, cars over 25 years old skip the DOT and EPA conversion requirements. In Canada the threshold is 15 years.

Once released, the car is collected from the port and delivered to your door.

Shipping a Land Rover Defender from the Netherlands to the USA starts here: loading day in Almen.

This is how every LIMA shipment begins. The Defender was collected from the seller, checked over and photographed, then secured on the transporter for the run to port.
