Rankin Supply In 1976, Doug and Betty Rankin purchased the former Cal Gardiner Shell Canada home heat agency in Thessalon, located at 359 River Road North.

Doug retired from owning and driving his own transport with Trans-Provincial Freight Carriers and dedicated his time to the new business. With his background in trucking, Doug expanded the fuels division, adding the first keylock diesel facility in the area, attracting a number of his former trucking friends. At the re-named Rankin Fuels location in Thessalon, he began to branch out into truck parts, filters, tires, and batteries and expanded the store hours. By the time Doug passed away in 1987, he had purchased the property next door to the fuel agency and added an addition to the building, and expanded the business name to "Rankin Fuels and Supply". Following Doug's passing, the company took many twists and turns, with up to 25 staff at one point, including The North Shore Sentinel, Rankin Service Centre, The File Folder, Hometown Rentals, and Thessalon Excavating and Contracting. For a time, the business also operated a summer ice cream parlour, a flea market, and the Thessalon Centennial Trade Show. Over the past 40 years, the business has supported countless local good causes and over 120 different people have worked in one division or the other at different times.

Looking back...Randy is celebrating a birthday today (not a milestone, but very close to one)! Over the past 50 years since Rankin Supply was founded in 1976, Randy has worked at least part-time most of that time. He owned and operated Rankin Service Centre on Highway 17 just east of Town for a few years in the late 1970s and early-'80s and worked at River Road Gulf, but for the past almost 40 years he's been managing Rankin Supply (originally Rankin Fuels). Randy and his wife Maxine have two children, Kurt and Amy (now third generation working in the business), and two beautiful grandchildren, Everett and Ellie. A Class A mechanic by trade, Randy also enjoys woodworking, watercolour painting, model trains, reading, world history and current events, and finding innovative ways to make almost anything broken work again. He and Maxine have traveled Canada and the US (much of it on a Goldwing), and he has volunteered with a number of groups, including the Thessalon Lions Club of which he served a term as president, and will soon retire from his third term as a municipal Councillor for the Town of Thessalon. Trying hard to semi-retire, we all wish him a happy birthday today!

Looking back...Brent began working at Rankin Fuels (later Rankin Fuels and Supply and then Rankin Supply, and with The Sentinel) on July 5, 1976 - starting wage was $2.00 per hour. He has been on staff ever since (with a brief part-time status for a year and a half), now wondering where the last 50 years went! "Thanks, everyone in our family and all the wonderful people we've come to know over the past 50 years," Brent says. "I've celebrated most of my last 50 birthdays here at work - and I can't think of where I'd rather be (well, almost nowhere!)."
