When we talk about Vulcanization, Charles Goodyear accidentally figured out the key to vulcanization when he let a piece of rubber fly off and land on a heating element, therefore discovering the principle of vulcanization.

Now that vulcanization is a key component of tire repair, heat pads play a major role in the process. In very layman's terms, the heat pad is composed of a slab of rubber with a heating element and a thermocouple that is used for vulcanizing the rubber.

Not to toot our own horn, but Vulcan Vulcap has some of the most innovative and efficient heat pads on the market!

As we’ve traveled through various locations worldwide, we noticed that often, heat pads aren’t manipulated properly and are often held by their cord rather than the pad in its entirety. By manipulating it properly, you’ll avoid damage and, in the long run, save on equipment costs! Another feature that you’ll definitely want to be aware of is the operating temperature. You don’t want to undercure or overcure your repairs, so definitely resist the urge to cut corners by cranking up the heat!

So what is vulcanization, and why is it so popular in the tire repair industry?

For starters, business owners save millions of dollars when they repair their existing damaged tire fleet rather than purchasing new ones. It also gives Mother Earth a hand as it promotes recycling and reusing what’s already there rather than sending tires to the scrap yard.

Vulcanization is a chemical process for hardening rubbers (such as tire rubber). The most common vulcanizing method is to treat natural rubber with specific chemicals, which causes a chemical reaction that softens materials that are touching (such as a patch and a tire) and binds them together, increasing the rubber’s rigidity and durability.

When we talk about Vulcanization, we need three very important elements - Heat, Pressure, and Time. In the coming weeks, we’ll be talking about each of these elements and how it translates into the various Vulcanization tools available! Stay tuned!
