PSA: Check Your Oil — And If You’re Car Shopping, Think “No Turbo” and “Local Dealer”

Last week, we had to tell several families their vehicles needed new engines.
Not because of bad luck — because they ran out of oil.
Those are hard conversations. Nobody budgets for a new engine, and most cars under $10K aren’t worth putting one in. That turns a small maintenance miss into a major financial hit.

Here’s what many people don’t realize:
Modern cars burn oil. So do older ones.
In fact, some manufacturers call oil consumption over 1L per 1,000 km “normal.” You can argue whether that’s really normal, and I could go into details why, but it happens often enough that the average 5,000–10,000 km between oil changes can mean running completely dry.

And don’t trust the indicator to warn you in time.
Many vehicles still don’t know actual oil level — they only monitor oil pressure. When that red oil light comes on, the damage is already happening. It’s not a “top-up” light; it’s a “too late” light.

Also, don’t confuse it with the maintenance reminder on your dash. That reminder is based on time or driving habits, not on oil level. It typically can’t tell you when you’re running out of oil.

So please — check your oil regularly.
Use your trip meter, set a reminder, or tie it to every second fuel fill. A few minutes and a $10 jug of oil can save you thousands.

When You Do Have to Go Vehicle Shopping

If you end up in the market for another car, here are three things that make a real difference in long-term reliability and repairability:

1. No Turbo (for your daily driver).
I love turbos — we build and tune them here — but turbos make power, not dependability.

Compare the past to the present:

2000 Pontiac Sunfire, 2.2L pushrod. These cars mostly died from rust, even with serious neglect, the engines outlasted the bodies.

2014 Chevy Cruze, 1.4L turbo. Yes, it makes more power and gets good mileage, but it also comes with a pile of weak links: oil cooler lives under a glowing turbo, and so leaks are common. Plastic PCV systems that fail under heat and pressure, and repairs that can snowball fast. A failed PCV path often means replacing both the intake manifold and the valve cover. Add the front-mounted intercooler that doesn’t appreciate winter snowbanks, and it’s a recipe for expensive repairs that the older car never needed.

Modern vehicles are engineered for fuel efficiency and emissions, not for user expense, repairability, or longevity. Complexity doesn’t equal reliability. Many components today are built with just enough material to do the job — every gram and dollar counts — and that comes at the cost of long-term durability. There’s no margin for neglect, no tolerance for imperfect clearances. With oil weights like 0W-16, oil isn’t just protection anymore — it’s also a design tool to reduce drag. That means everything from bearing clearances to surface finishes is pushed to the edge, and even a little carbon or debris in the system can cause serious damage.

2. Buy something with a local dealer.
We try to fix many brands and problems here — that’s our goal, to keep vehicles on the road and people out of car payments. But newer vehicles sometimes require dealer-only access: module programming, VIN-specific calibrations, or parts that only come through brand channels.

3. Hybrids

About 90% of the reasons turbos are bad for dependability and costs of ownership also apply to hybrids. Fuel isn’t your only cost — complexity is. The perfect storm for costly long-term ownership are turbocharged, hybrid, AWD vehicles. They can be engineered very well and still fail simply because there’s so much going on, and every system depends on another. Buy the lower-cost brand of that combination and you’re even more likely to see trouble. These vehicles may not make it far past ten years before a single major repair — sometimes electrical, sometimes drivetrain — ends them early, even when the rest of the car still looks great. They also love to eat tires and are amazingly overweight which means even with all the tech they use as much fuel as a 90’s economy car.

Summary,

We’re here to help people keep their vehicles running. If you want an amazing performance vehicle — or you choose a diesel, hybrid, or electric car — that’s your call, and we understand that completely. But if you rely on your vehicle as an appliance, make sure you truly understand what you’re choosing.

Complexity and dependability sit at opposite ends of the scale, and affordability isn’t in the middle. There’s no free lunch in vehicle design — if you pick the most complicated powertrain at the lowest price, you’re likely to have poor results.

Modern cars try to do everything, and they’re sold at prices that once could buy a home. Consider what you actually need and be intentional about your purchase.

🚗 Smart Exhaust Repair Solutions at Innovation Autoworks 🔧

Finding the right exhaust repair isn’t always straightforward. Many vehicles today have exhaust parts sold only as full assemblies, often including costly components like catalytic converters—even when only a small section is bad. And in some cases, the parts just don’t exist anymore (like a 2009 Toyota Matrix AWD 2.4L).

💡 Our Approach:
For most exhaust repairs, we still prioritize direct-fit, pre-bent replacements—they’re the most cost-effective when available and don’t force you into unnecessary expenses. But when that’s not an option, we offer a custom-built solution using mandrel-bent universal piping to replace only what’s needed, without paying for expensive extras.

🔧 What You Need to Know About Custom Exhaust Repairs:
✅ Rust is always a factor—we live in a region with salted winter roads, and rusted exhaust pipes don’t weld well. While patch repairs can be risky, they can also hold up for years in the right conditions. We’ll always assess whether a repair is a smart long-term option.
✅ Custom exhaust work is time-intensive—precise fitting and welding take longer than a direct-fit replacement. It’s a great solution when necessary, but we’ll always recommend the most practical and cost-effective repair first.
✅ Higher-quality materials—our mandrel-bent sections provide better airflow and durability than some aftermarket options, making them a solid choice when a standard replacement isn’t feasible.

Whether you need a direct replacement or a custom fix, we’ve got you covered. If your exhaust system needs work, let’s talk about the best solution for your vehicle and your budget.

Understanding Wheels, Tires, and Alignments: Addressing High-Speed Vibrations

When it comes to high-speed vibrations, particularly those occurring at 70 km/h or higher, one of the most common sources of confusion is assuming that the issue is related to wheel alignment. It’s understandable why this happens—alignment issues are a well-known cause of handling problems—but they’re rarely the culprit behind high-speed shakes.
To make matters worse, the alignment process itself typically doesn’t involve driving the vehicle at high speeds, so unless the issue is really noticeable, it might not show up during an alignment check. So, a customer’s concern can be completely missed. To add to what seems to be a perfect storm in negative customer relations, It’s important to note that a poor alignment can sometimes lessen or mask vibrations by dragging tires across the road creating a dampening effect, although I have not seen it for some time, it is possible to actually have an experience where an alignment can make high-speed vibration worse. Wheel alignment is primarily concerned with adjusting the steering angles to correct pulling, uneven tire wear, and twitchy steering.
It’s a common belief that hitting a bump or pothole will knock your vehicle out of alignment. While this can happen in rare cases, most alignment issues are actually caused by worn-out parts, not sudden impacts. So, if you experience a high-speed shake after hitting a harsh pothole, it’s more likely due to a bent rim or damaged tire rather than an alignment problem.
If you notice a shake at highway speeds—especially after a seasonal tire change—the first step is to ensure your wheels are properly torqued and the lug nuts are tight. Once that’s checked, high-speed vibrations are typically caused by something round, like tires or wheels, not being perfectly round or balanced. Common issues include mud build-up in the wheels, which can act like an unbalanced weight. It’s important to remember that while balancing can correct minor imperfections, it won’t fix more serious issues like out-of-round tires or wheels, it won’t make things round if they are not. Though less common, wheel hub, driveline or axle issues can also contribute to these vibrations.
To ensure we fully address any concerns, it’s always helpful to mention if you’re experiencing high-speed vibrations when you bring your vehicle in. Asking for an alignment may not resolve the issue, and the technician may not realize there’s a vibration problem if it isn’t clear. By letting us know exactly what you’re feeling, we can better identify and address the cause of the issue.
High-speed vibrations can be particularly tricky to diagnose because there’s often little visible evidence when the vehicle is on the hoist. While severely out-of-round tires are easy to spot, minor issues that might not affect some vehicles can cause noticeable problems in others. For example, a slightly out-of-round tire on an heavy diesel 1-ton truck with heavy 10-ply E-rated tires might not show any obvious signs, but on a lighter, lifted Toyota, that same tire could result in a much more noticeable vibration. There are many factors to consider, and diagnosing these issues is part of the art of vehicle repair.
Thanks for hanging in there for a long read—you’re now better equipped to have a positive experience with whoever handles your vehicle or tire repairs!

🚨 PSA for Tire Season 🚨

Whether you’re swapping your own wheels, having a tire shop do it, or we're handling it at Innovation Autoworks, don’t forget this crucial step!

WHEEL RETORQUE AFTER SERVICE

At Innovation Autoworks, we take wheel safety seriously. After any service or inspection that involves removing the wheels, it’s essential to retorque them to ensure they remain secure, especially with aluminum wheels and vehicles exposed to the corrosion of the north.

We follow a thorough procedure:
1️⃣ We torque the wheels while the vehicle is lifted.
2️⃣ We manually retorque them again after a city test drive.

While it’s a common misconception that wheels come loose because someone forgot a step, this is rarely the case. Most instances of wheels coming loose after service work occur on older vehicles with aluminum wheels and corrosion. Regardless, for all vehicles, we recommend a retorque within 50 KM of any wheel-off service to ensure your safety.

✅ Your safety is our priority!

Stay safe this tire season!

Short notice, but it could be a blast! If you've been itching to try a drag-and-drive event, here's your chance. It's a one-day affair, so no need for hotel stays, and you'll get a great feel for the drive/race/drive camaraderie all in one day.

On August 16th (yes, less than two weeks away), join me for a cruise from the northwest to the BVDRA event in Houston. We'll leave Terrace on Saturday morning, grab an early lunch in Smithers, and then make a few time-only passes between the bracket races. After that, we'll head back to Smithers for supper and then road trip home.

Given the short notice, it's more important that you love drag racing, road trips, and have a well-maintained vehicle rather than a super-fast car. Even if just a few cars join the road trip, that's perfectly fine.

If there's enough interest, we could plan something bigger for next year, like heading to Houston on a Friday night, renting the PG track on Saturday night, and racing in Houston again on Sunday. Not sure if that's even possible, but it sure would be fun!

PM me Dallas Wiebe if interested.
