From Our Little Corner of Ontario, Thank You.

As School Bus Safety Week comes to a close, we're reminded that keeping students safe takes more than a school bus and a dedicated driver. It takes a community that looks out for one another.

To our drivers and monitors who care for students along every route, families who practise safe habits at the bus stop, teachers who reinforce those lessons, and neighbours who slow down and watch for children along our roads - thank you.

On rural roads and in small communities, a little extra patience and awareness can make a big difference.

School Bus Safety Week may be ending, but looking out for our students is something we can all continue, one school day at a time.

No Shortcut Is Worth the Risk.

On rural roads, school bus stops aren't always near sidewalks or marked crossings. Students may need to cross the roadway to get to or from their bus, making your attention behind the wheel especially important.

When approaching a school bus, remember:

• Flashing amber lights: Slow down and prepare to stop.

• Flashing red lights or an extended stop arm: Come to a complete stop. On roads without a median, traffic in both directions must stop.

• Approaching from behind: Stay at least 20 metres back and wait until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is retracted before proceeding.

Whether you're running late or travelling a familiar route, a few extra moments of patience can make all the difference.

No destination is more important than getting our children there safely.

Dropped Something? Leave It!

A mitten slips off. A water bottle rolls away. A favourite toy falls out of a backpack.

It's a natural reaction for a child to stop and pick something up, but near a school bus, that simple action can put them in serious danger.

The area immediately surrounding a school bus is known as the Danger Zone, where the driver may not be able to see children standing, walking or bending down.

Here's what every child should know:

• Leave it where it falls. Never bend down, reach underneath the bus or attempt to retrieve something near its wheels.

• Move away from the bus. Take at least 10 giant steps away to reach a safer distance, where the driver can see you.

• Ask for help. Tell your driver or a trusted adult what happened. Never return to the bus to retrieve an item on your own.

Parents and caregivers: Talk to your children about the Danger Zone and practise the 10 Giant Steps Rule together.

Remember: No lost item is worth risking your safety.

Fall Mornings Can Be Tricky. 🍂

Foggy roads, wet leaves, darker mornings and the occasional wildlife crossing. Fall driving in our neck of the woods can bring a few surprises!

But there's one thing motorists should always be looking out for: students making their way to the school bus.

Fog and low morning light can make children waiting along the roadside harder to see, while wet leaves and damp pavement can reduce traction and increase stopping distances.

A great reminder to all road users:

• Reduce speed when visibility is limited.
• Leave extra stopping distance, especially on wet roads.
• Watch carefully for children walking toward or waiting at roadside bus stops.
• Pays attention to school bus warning lights and be prepared to stop.

A little extra caution on your morning drive can make a big difference for the students sharing our roads.

Missed the Bus? Don't Chase It!

We've all had those mornings. The alarm didn't go off, someone couldn't find their shoes, and suddenly the school bus is already heading down the road.

But here's one safety rule worth remembering: never chase a departing school bus.

Running after a bus or attempting to catch up with it in your vehicle can create dangerous situations on the road.

If your child misses their bus, the safest choice is to make alternate arrangements rather than trying to intercept it along the route.

A good backup plan can make a hectic morning a whole lot safer!
Because getting to school safely is always more important than getting there in a hurry.

A Familiar Face on the Morning Route.

A friendly greeting at the bus stop. A familiar smile to start the school day. For many students, their school bus driver is more than the person behind the wheel. They're a trusted and reassuring part of their daily routine.

On School Bus Driver & Monitor Appreciation Day, we're celebrating the dedicated Wilson drivers and monitors who bring patience, kindness and care to every journey.

Thank you for the difference you make in the lives of the students and families we serve!

The Five-Minute Head Start!

We know mornings can be hectic! Between breakfast, backpacks and getting everyone out the door, those last few minutes can feel like a race against the clock.

But when it comes to catching the school bus, a little extra time makes a big difference.

Having your child at their designated safe waiting spot 5–10 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive helps avoid last-minute rushing, running toward the bus or making unsafe decisions in a hurry.

A calmer morning means a safer start to the school day.
