Some people give because they have plenty to spare. Others give simply because helping people is who they are.
Today, we are head out to Ship Cove to congratulate DOREEN YOUNG as this week's Speedy Star of the Week! Doreen's name seems to come up whenever there's a community organization, fundraiser, or person who could use a helping hand. If there's a ticket to be sold, there's a good chance you've seen Doreen selling it on Facebook. She spent years volunteering with the Cadets Parent Committee and continues to give her time to the Port au Port Heritage Church, helping with anything that needs doing, from cleaning to painting!
Doreen recently celebrated her 65th birthday, but slowing down apparently wasn't on the agenda! Hard work doesn't scare this lady. She still cuts and stacks firewood, mows her large yard, and hangs her clothes on the line all year long - because apparently Newfoundland winter is no match for Doreen😂. And if your vehicle breaks down, you may want to have Doreen nearby. She's not afraid to pop the hood, get a little grease on her hands and have a look. She may not physically fix it for you, but there's a pretty good chance she will have an opinion on what's wrong! 🔧😂
Doreen loves antiques, creates beautiful flower arrangements for graves throughout the area, collects recycling and puts the money aside so it's there when someone needs a little help, and continues to open her home and give her time caring for others. This shines through in her work as a home care worker, and how she not only cares for her clients, but welcomes them into her home each day, sometimes for full weeks or weekends at a time. Doreen is a mom to two living boys and one angel boy, and despite her struggles with Celiac disease, she makes them her world and refuses to slow down.
There's even a saying that pretty much sums up how many lives Doreen has touched: "If she's not related to you, she's been at your place."♥
Life hasn't always handed Doreen an easy road. She's experienced tremendous loss and difficult times of her own. Yet through it all, she has continued to work hard, speak her mind, show up for her family and community, and give what she can to others - and that says an awful lot about a person!
Doreen, communities like ours are better because of people like you - they don't wait to be asked for help, they simply get to work. Thank you for your years of volunteering, fundraising, helping, caring, and giving. We're pretty sure there are more people who have benefited from your kindness than you will ever realize.
There was one detail about Doreen that her nominator worried would affect her getting this recognition - apparently Doreen is a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Well, regardless of everyone's opinion on that, we're giving her the star anyway - because this is about celebrating a hard working woman who has spent so much of her life helping others.
Doreen, our wish for you today is a day of relaxation (if you know how) and warm thoughts, knowing how many people appreciate you today and everyday.
Congratulations on being this week's Speedy Star of the Week! ⭐⭐⭐
