🚧 Heads up, St. John’s! 🚧

The Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path & Airport Heights Drive intersection is transitioning from traffic lights to a roundabout.

Overnight work is tentatively planned for September 10–17. Expect changes to traffic patterns and continued construction in the area.

Please drive carefully and follow posted signs and traffic control directions. 🚗⚠️

⚠️Upcoming Transition to a Roundabout: Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive Intersection

Work continues on the new roundabout at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive.

🔄 THE INTERSECTION IS CHANGING 🔄
The traffic lights will be removed and the intersection will transition from a signalized intersection to a roundabout. The transition is being planned to minimize impacts on motorists.

👀 WHAT TO EXPECT 👀
➡️ Overnight Transition: The work is expected to take approximately 10–12 hours and will be completed overnight, where possible. We are tentatively targeting one night between September 10 and 17. The date is subject to change based on weather and operational requirements.
➡️ Avoiding the Back-to-School Rush: The work will be scheduled outside the peak back-to-school hours.
➡️ Advance Notice: The specific date and timing will be shared in advance once the schedule is finalized. Stay tuned for updates.

🚧 AFTER THE TRANSITION 🚧
➡️ Active Construction Zone: The intersection will remain an active construction zone. Motorists should continue to be patient, follow all signs and directions from traffic control personnel, and use caution when travelling through the area.
➡️ Traffic Patterns: During construction, traffic will use a single lane through the roundabout. The location and configuration of lanes may change as construction progresses. The completed roundabout will have two lanes.
➡️ Schedule: Construction remains on target for completion by the end of 2026.

💬 WE HEAR YOU. IT’S FRUSTRATING. 💬
We know construction has been challenging, particularly in an area with limited alternative routes. Keeping traffic moving while construction continues is a delicate balance, and we understand the frustration. We appreciate motorists' patience and understanding as we work toward completing this project. We are looking forward to seeing it completed as much as you are.

The City of St. John’s will provide updates on traffic interruptions and progress throughout the duration of the project:

Positive changes coming to Commonwealth Avenue!

Great to see safety and traffic flow improvements taking shape, including the new pedestrian crossing at the T’Railway.

Please drive carefully and watch for the upcoming changes.

Safety and traffic flow improvements are coming to Commonwealth Avenue!

The new pedestrian-activated crossing at the T'Railway is almost complete and will soon provide a safer way for pedestrians and trail users to cross Commonwealth Avenue.

In preparation, you will soon notice a new lane configuration at the Commonwealth Avenue, Park Avenue and Ruth Avenue intersection. When travelling in the southbound outside lane of Commonwealth Avenue, motorists can continue straight through the intersection, as there will no longer be a mandatory right-turn lane onto Ruth Avenue.

Vehicles travelling east on Ruth Avenue and turning right onto southbound Commonwealth Avenue will now be required to stop before entering Commonwealth Avenue, rather than yield.

This project, funded in part through a grant from Trans Canada Trail, is designed to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists while enhancing traffic flow through the intersection.
Motorists can expect temporary lane restrictions while signal poles are installed, and line painting is completed. Please use caution and follow all posted signage in the area.

The City appreciates the public's cooperation as final work is completed and these safety improvements are put into service.

For updates and traffic impact notices, please follow the City of Mount Pearl's official page and visit heymountpearl.ca/commonwealth-crosswalk for a location map, information on how the crossing works, and to sign up for project updates.

FYI.....If you're travelling toward Donovan's Industrial Park, you will no longer be able to make a left turn at the intersection. Instead, turn right and use the roundabout at Kenmount Road Extension/Karwood Drive to reach your destination.

🚧 Traffic Advisory – TCH Exit 42 & Kenmount Road

Starting Sunday, August 2, a temporary traffic change will be in effect at TCH westbound Exit 42 and Kenmount Road.

Motorists heading toward Donovan's Industrial Park will no longer be able to turn left at the intersection. Instead, they must turn right and use the roundabout at Kenmount Road Extension/Karwood Drive to reach their destination.

This pilot project is aimed at improving traffic flow and safety. Please follow posted signage and use caution while travelling through the area.
