NEW WINTER ROAD RULES ARE NOW IN EFFECT ACROSS MANITOBA

Winter driving can already feel stressful, especially when you are trying to figure out how close is too close around snowplows, cyclists, or roadside workers. That uncertainty has led to a lot of confusion over the years.
Because of that, the Manitoba government has introduced clearer road rules that are now officially in effect.
The goal is simple. Take the guesswork out and make winter roads safer for everyone.
Here is what drivers should know:

GIVE SNOWPLOWS MORE SPACE. When a snowplow has blue lights on, drivers must stay back:
30 metres on roads with speed limits of 80 km/h or lower
100 metres on faster roads. Passing is not allowed if visibility is poor or if it could interfere with their work.

MORE ROOM FOR CYCLISTS. Drivers now need to leave at least one full metre when passing someone on a bike. This brings Manitoba in line with other provinces and helps reduce close calls.

SAFER WORK ZONES FOR TOW TRUCKS. Tow truck and roadside assistance workers can now set up cones and warning signs to create space while helping drivers on busy roads.
These changes are about fewer close calls, safer winter drives, and protecting the people working out on our roads when conditions are tough.

November 3rd: Daylight Saving Time ends.
You get an extra hour of sleep. I get killed on the highway.
Here's why:
When clocks "fall back," your evening commute happens at dusk—exactly when deer are most active.
The Facts:

Deer-vehicle collisions SPIKE 300% the week after DST ends
October-November = deer mating season (bucks are distracted, reckless)
1.5 million deer-vehicle collisions per year in the US
200 human deaths, 26,000 injuries annually
$10 billion in vehicle damage

Why this happens:

Deer move at dawn and dusk (crepuscular)
Your commute suddenly overlaps with their active hours
Rutting bucks chase does across roads without looking
You're driving in the dark, going too fast

What YOU can do:

Slow down at dusk (5-7 PM in November)
If you see one deer, expect 5 more (they travel in groups)
Don't swerve—brake firmly and stay in your lane
High beams in rural areas (see reflective eyes sooner)

I don't want to die. You don't want a totaled car.
Slow. Down.

It's back to school time! Kids might not hear, see, or understand traffic the way adults do. That’s why it is important everyone is extra cautious around schools and daycares. Whether you walk, bike, or drive, it's a good time to review these road safety tips: https://winnipeg.info/3VvtA2p

Slow down around schools. Motorists are reminded that reduced speed limits in school zones are back in effect beginning September 1.

Maximum speed limits of 30 km/h around many Winnipeg schools are in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday during the months of September to June inclusive.
