Wrapping up Day 2 of gout academic detailing training!

The RxFiles team spent the day reviewing, discussing, and practicing the content that will support upcoming academic detailing visits on the pharmacological management of gout.

The day included:
- Reviewing the gout newsletter and identifying opportunities to clarify and strengthen the content
- Practicing academic detailing conversations in small groups
- Speaking with a local family physician to better understand the questions, priorities, and practical considerations that may influence prescribers
- Playing gout Jeopardy to test the team’s knowledge
- Staying fueled with a prescription for “500 mg cookies”

Academic detailing training involves more than reviewing the evidence. It also means practicing how to engage prescribers in balanced, practical conversations that reflect the realities of clinical care.

After two full days of discussion, feedback, and practice, the RxFiles team is ready to bring the gout topic into academic detailing visits.

What happens after Day 1 of pan-Canadian gout training? A little friendly competition!

Following the first day of training for the Pan-Canadian Academic Detailing Initiative, the team headed to Activate Regina for an evening of interactive games and team building.

The group divided into teams and competed for points through a variety of live-action games requiring teamwork, movement, and quick thinking. Not every round went according to plan. One photo captures a team’s particularly impressive score of zero!

Unfortunately, a computer glitch meant the final scores could not confirm which team truly won. In the spirit of collaboration, everyone received a trophy. 🏆

The teams then continued the evening over supper, joined by RxFiles academic detailing alumni Vaughn and Brenda.

Thank you to everyone who made the evening so memorable!

A first-of-its-kind collaboration for academic detailing in Canada

RxFiles is currently training in Regina as part of the Pan-Canadian Academic Detailing Initiative.

The initiative brings together four established provincial academic detailing programs:
- BC Provincial Academic Detailing Service
- Dalhousie Academic Detailing Service
- RxFiles
- Centre for Effective Practice

With support from Canada’s Drug Agency, the participating programs are collaborating on a shared appropriate-use topic: the pharmacological management of gout and related medication considerations.

For this project, all four programs will provide prescribers with coordinated, evidence-based information on best prescribing practices. The initiative also creates an opportunity for academic detailing programs to learn from one another and test a common pathway that can be used across jurisdictions.

The training brought representatives from the four programs and from Canada’s Drug Agency together by video conference, .

In addition to supporting the current gout topic, the project aims to develop a replicable process for future pan-Canadian academic detailing collaborations. Lessons from the initiative will be captured through a comprehensive evaluation, with key findings shared across Canada and beyond.

🎸 Calling all fans of evidence-based medicine...

The speakers at PEIP 2026 may not be selling out stadiums, but for many healthcare providers they are the closest thing we have to rock stars.

Why?

Because they have a knack for taking complicated evidence and turning it into practical clinical pearls that clinicians can actually use in practice.

Hosted by our friends and collaborators at PEER, PEIP 2026 is designed by clinicians for clinicians and focuses on practical primary care topics, critically appraised evidence, and real-world application. The conference is free from industry funding.

📅 October 16-17, 2026
📍 Attend in Edmonton or virtually.

There's still time to register!

RxFiles Hidden Gem: Patient Resources

Did you know that RxFiles offers patient education resources in addition to drug comparison charts?

One popular example is the SADMANS Medication List, an open-access patient handout that helps patients understand which medications may need to be temporarily held during periods of acute illness associated with dehydration.

These resources can help support conversations about:
✅ medication safety
✅ self-management during illness
✅ patient education
✅ shared decision-making

The SADMANS tool is freely available and can be printed, shared, or incorporated into counselling discussions.

Access the tool here:

Do you regularly use SADMANS in your practice?
