Expanding What We Can Do at TK Tire & Auto!

We’re continuing to invest in equipment and technology to expand what we can diagnose and repair in-house.

Our latest addition is the Matco RAP Assist, giving us additional module programming, software update, relearn and remote diagnostic capabilities allowing us to keep more jobs in-house that may otherwise require a trip to the dealership.

We’re also working toward expanding our in-house programming capabilities to include GPEC2/GPEC2A ECM unlocking, allowing us to offer tuning options such as disabling cylinder deactivation on many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles - similar to what we can already offer on GM vehicles.

6L80 Transmission Upgrade!

This is for the GMC/Chev 2014-2018 pickups and 2014-2020 full size SUV’s (Yukon, Tahoe, Suburban)

The factory 6L80 thermostat doesn’t fully open until around 194°F (90°C), keeping transmission temperatures higher than necessary.

GM later released an updated valve that opens around 158°F (70°C), or you can go with a PPE bypass that allows continuous cooler flow and adds a magnetic plug to help catch debris.

Keeping the 6L80 cooler can help extend fluid and transmission life, especially when towing or working the vehicle.

A simple preventative upgrade worth considering on any 6L80!

Quick little coil diagnostic test.

Here’s another handy use for a pen-style non-contact voltage tester.

Watch the tester as it’s held near each ignition coil. On the first coil, you’ll see a single flash as the tester picks up the electromagnetic field produced when the coil fires.

On the second coil, the tester doesn’t detect that same field and gives a repeating double flash instead.

That tells us there’s potentially a faulty coil or an issue with its power/control circuit.

In this case, further testing confirmed the ignition coil itself had failed.

This isn’t the only test we used to diagnose the problem, but it’s a quick and simple way to compare coil operation and help point the diagnosis in the right direction.

This is one of many reasons we won’t just install pads only on a brake job (pad slapping).

The front of this rotor doesn’t look to be in terrible shape, but the backside is heavily rusted.

The inner braking surface is heavily rusted and deteriorated, leaving far less usable surface for the brake pad to contact properly.

This is one of the reasons we won’t simply install new brake pads onto rotors that aren’t serviceable. New pads need a proper braking surface to bed in and operate as intended.

That doesn’t mean every brake job automatically needs new rotors, either. We offer rotor resurfacing when the rotors are suitable for it, meaning they aren’t excessively rusted or damaged and will remain above minimum thickness after machining.

In this case, resurfacing wasn’t a reasonable option. New rotors were required.

Out with the old in with the new!

Replaced these Cognito control arms with a set of Kryptonite đź’Ş They helped even more with correcting the upper ball joint angles.

Replacement parts are easier and faster to get for Kryptonite we’ve found, if needed. One upper ball joint and all the bushings had play on the Cognitos.

We are now stocking Kryptonite control arm bushings and lower ball joints for the GM’s.

This has been a fun ongoing project — upgrading this truck to make it look and run top notch!

We set it up with a BDS 4.5” lift kit, Kryptonite Ultimate Front End kit, upgraded upper control arms (Kryptonite ones to come), new lower control arms, and Bilstein 5100s to make it ride as good as it looks.

We also flashed custom tuning and installed a 5-position switch, letting this truck go from mild to wild at the turn of a dial!
