Big Chute has a wilder history than most people realize. Back in 1914 the plan was to build a normal water lock here to connect the Severn River to Georgian Bay. Then World War I hit, workers and money dried up, and the government threw up a “temporary” wooden marine railway in 1917 just to keep the Trent-Severn Waterway moving. It got rebuilt bigger in 1923.

Here’s the twist though. By the 1960s boat traffic had outgrown that old railway, and the obvious fix was finally building a real lock. But by then the invasive sea lamprey had wiped out Great Lakes trout fisheries after slipping in through the Welland Canal, and a lock at Big Chute would have opened the door for lampreys to reach Lake Simcoe. So instead of solving the bottleneck with a lock, they built an even bigger railway in 1978, the one still hauling boats today. A hundred years of “temporary” fixes and it is still the only marine railway of its kind in North America.

Wild to think we rode over land on rails today because of a fish nobody wanted in Lake Simcoe.

🌊 Watch Your Wake on the Trent-Severn Waterway 🚤

A boat’s wake can travel far beyond the vessel itself. Excessive wake can contribute to shoreline erosion, damage docks and waterfront property, and create unsafe conditions for paddlers, anglers, swimmers, and other boaters.

As you enjoy the waterways this season, please:
✅ Slow down near shorelines, docks, and marinas
✅ Observe posted speed and no-wake zones
✅ Be mindful when passing smaller vessels and paddlers

Does the constant up and down water levels got you finding rocks or shoals that you didn’t think was there before? Does your prop and/or skeg look like a shark came up and took a big bite out of it? If yes, we can help you!!

We act as a prop depot and we can send your prop out for repair with a one week turnaround. Pick ups and drop offs are every Tuesday and Wednesday. If your prop is too far gone, we offer new and used props in many sizes.

We also offer skeg repairs on site with a two week turnaround.

Happy Victoria Day Long Weekend! We wish all our customers a fun and safe weekend on the waterways. ☀️ 🌊

The navigation season will open in stages starting on Friday, May 15th, with Lock 42 - Couchiching to Lock 45 - Port Severn closed to navigation. ⛔

Increased precipitation in March and April, coupled with significant snowpack in both the Trent and Severn watersheds, has necessitated additional time to reduce water levels and flows to ensure safe boating conditions across the system.

All lockstations will remain open to land-based visitation.
