Summer heat doesn't just make the day uncomfortable, it can quickly become dangerous, especially for those who spend long hours behind the wheel.
Professional drivers know the importance of watching road conditions. This time of year, it's just as important to watch for the signs your body may be giving you.
If you begin feeling dizzy, weak, nauseous, or develop a headache, don't ignore it. These can be early signs of heat exhaustion. Pull over, hydrate and if symptoms persist seek medical attention immediately, heatstroke is a medical emergency.
If you're taking your required rest break in the cab, make sure your truck can be kept at a safe temperature. Stay hydrated throughout the day, avoid waiting until you're thirsty to drink water, and check on your fellow drivers whenever you can. Sometimes the first person to notice something isn't right is a colleague.
And as always, never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels far faster than most people realize.
This summer, let's all do our part to look out for ourselves, our teammates, and those sharing the road with us. Safe deliveries always start with a safe driver.
