Fuel vent fittings often get overlooked, but they play a critical role in your fuel system.

🔍 Photo 1:
This fuel vent is equipped with a flame screen. That’s good—it helps prevent flame or sparks from traveling back into the fuel tank. However, this style of vent does not prevent water intrusion. In heavy rain or following seas, water can still enter the fuel system through this fitting.

🔍 Photo 2:
This vent is the correct type designed to reduce water entry, but corrosion has taken over. The internal flame screen is visibly rusted and deteriorated, restricting airflow. Poor ventilation can lead to fuel tank pressure issues, engine performance problems, and long-term fuel system damage.

⚠️ Pro tip for boaters:
• Fuel vents must allow free airflow
• Flame screens must be intact and corrosion-free
• Vents should minimize water ingress
• Any corrosion, blockage, or staining is a red flag worth investigating

This Vancouver 27 full-keel fiberglass sailboat is a great example of why these boats have such a loyal following. Known for their heavy displacement, deep full keel, and strong fiberglass construction, Vancouver 27s are designed for offshore capability, directional stability, and confidence in rough conditions—not just fair-weather cruising.

During inspection, special attention is always given to hull condition, keel integrity, rudder and skeg areas, through-hulls, deck hardware, rigging, and overall structural layout. Full-keel vessels like this reward careful inspection, especially around keel-to-hull joints, grounding history, and underwater appendages.

Whether you’re buying a classic cruiser, insuring a proven passagemaker, or establishing fair market value, a proper marine survey matters—especially on vessels built to go the distance.

This photo shows an AC shore power connection and breaker panel, and there are a few important issues worth talking about.

First big red flag 🚩: the shore power cable is permanently wired directly into the breaker box. That’s not allowed. Shore power must be disconnectable, typically via a proper shore power inlet (plug) mounted on the hull. You should never have a permanent cable hard-wired straight into a panel like this.

Other key requirements that are missing or questionable here:

An ELCI (Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter) should be installed to protect against electric shock and stray current faults.

The main shore power breaker should be a double-pole breaker, so both hot and neutral are disconnected simultaneously.

A reverse polarity indicator is required to warn when shore power wiring is unsafe.

AC wiring should be properly secured, protected from chafe, and enclosed—the panel cover must always be installed during normal operation.

AC systems should be clearly laid out and separated so faults are easy to identify and isolate.

This setup is a good example of how AC electrical issues can quietly sneak up on a boat. It may “work,” but it doesn’t mean it’s safe—and AC faults are one of the most serious fire and shock risks onboard.

👉 Pro tip: If your boat has shore power, make sure it’s plug-in, protected, labeled, and compliant. When in doubt, have it inspected.

This 1995 Carver 430 Mariner was recently hauled for a seasonal bottom cleanup and a full hull inspection as part of an insurance survey. Haul-outs like this are the perfect opportunity to really see what’s going on below the waterline—hull condition, running gear, through-hulls, and overall underwater integrity.

Carver yachts are well known for their solid construction, generous interior volume, and comfortable cruising layouts. But no matter how well a boat is built, time, use, and the marine environment always leave their mark. That’s why periodic inspections—especially during haul-outs—are so important for safety, insurance compliance, and long-term value.

This was found during a survey on a Bayliner 3888 Motor Yacht. A minor saltwater leak was dripping onto the gearbox, and in a very short time it created heavy salt residue and visible corrosion on the transmission casing and nearby components.

Saltwater is unforgiving. Even a slow drip will aggressively attack castings, fasteners, seals, and paint almost immediately. That’s why it’s so important to:
• Inspect all seawater hoses, fittings, and clamps regularly
• Replace gaskets and seals before they fail, not after
• Keep engine spaces clean and dry so leaks are spotted early
• Never ignore “minor” drips—salt doesn’t wait

The good news? This one is very manageable. Remove the hose, clean the area thoroughly, replace the gasket or fitting, stop the leak, and address the surface corrosion before it progresses.

And that’s the key takeaway: the rest of this boat was in great shape—this was the only recommendation. Finding small issues early is exactly what a survey is meant to do.
