🔥 2017 Mercedes C63 S AMG pre purchase inspection at Auto Extreme today. A beautiful low mileage example of one of the most iconic modern AMG sedans, with a specific finding worth sharing with any prospective AMG buyer.

The C63 S AMG occupies a special place in the modern performance sedan market. Hand built AMG twin turbo V8. 503 horsepower. The last generation of C63 to carry a V8 before the switch to the current four cylinder hybrid configuration. For enthusiasts, these are already becoming genuinely collectible.

Mid inspection on this specific vehicle, we identified that the exhaust has been modified. Here is why that matters for any prospective buyer:

🔧 Warranty implications. Modified exhaust on a modern AMG can affect manufacturer warranty coverage on related powertrain components, particularly if the modification removes or alters emissions equipment

🔧 Resale value considerations. The used performance car market has mixed preferences on modifications. Some buyers want stock. Some buyers appreciate specific aftermarket upgrades. Knowing which configuration you are buying affects both future resale and insurance considerations

🔧 Compliance considerations. Depending on the specific modification and jurisdiction, some aftermarket exhaust systems can affect vehicle inspection, registration, or regulatory compliance in Canadian provinces

🔧 Driving character implications. AMG exhaust from factory is already dramatic. Modifications can change the character in ways that may or may not align with buyer expectations

For prospective buyers at this level, identifying modifications during pre purchase inspection is a real protection point. The low mileage and overall condition on this specific car are genuine positives. Full understanding of what has been changed from factory is part of what defines informed buying at the performance vehicle level.

At Car Inspected, modification identification is standard on every performance vehicle inspection we deliver. Over 10,000 inspections since 2009.

🔧 How not to replace a quick shock. A real finding from a recent 2019 Infiniti QX60 inspection, and a reminder that previous repair work matters as much as original condition on any used vehicle.

Here is what we found during the inspection. The quick shock had been replaced at some point in the vehicle's history. The problem was that the critical washers required for proper installation were missing from the setup.

This is not a cosmetic concern. It has real consequences for the vehicle:

🚨 Without the washers, the top mount cannot seat properly in the vehicle structure
🚨 Without proper seating, the shock absorber cannot function as designed to absorb impacts and road inputs
🚨 Vehicle alignment can be thrown off entirely, affecting tire wear patterns and handling
🚨 Over time, the improperly installed component accelerates wear on surrounding suspension and alignment components, compounding the problem

For prospective used vehicle buyers, this illustrates something important about pre purchase inspection. The quality of previous repair work matters as much as the original vehicle condition. Not every repair gets done properly. Not every mechanic pays attention to the small details that actually make a repair functional. And many of these details become invisible to anyone who does not know to look.

A buyer doing a casual walk around would never notice this. A test drive might reveal symptoms but not identify the cause. Only direct professional inspection of the installation reveals what actually happened.

At Car Inspected, this level of attention to prior repair work quality is standard on every inspection we conduct. Because knowing what was done to a car matters almost as much as knowing what originally came with it. 🔍

🔧 Used 2021 Ford Escape buying guide. Here is what every prospective buyer needs to check on this specific model.

The Escape sits in one of the most competitive segments in the Canadian used SUV market. Solid overall reputation, wide availability across trim configurations, and pricing that keeps it accessible to a broad range of buyers. But like every vehicle, this specific model has its own signature of items worth verifying during a proper pre purchase inspection.

Here is what we prioritize on an Escape inspection:

🔧 Rear shock absorber assessment. Check for leakage which indicates seal failure and pending replacement. The practical part for buyers is that you can get a good look at the rear shocks from under the vehicle without needing a lift. The Escape has enough ground clearance to allow direct visual inspection

🛞 Rear brake pad condition. Watch for spongy pedal feel and visible uneven wear patterns. Both indicate specific problems that need investigation. Uneven wear can point to caliper issues or alignment problems

⚙️ Transmission shifting behavior. Best assessed with Ford compatible diagnostic software combined with a proper test drive under varied conditions. Ford specific software surfaces manufacturer level information that generic OBD scanners cannot access

🎨 Paint thickness verification across all panels. Identifies any undisclosed accident work or panel refinishing

📋 Full maintenance record review. Non negotiable on any used vehicle

🔧 Trim configuration verification. The Escape is available in front wheel drive and all wheel drive configurations. Confirm which one you are actually purchasing and factor the differences into your evaluation. AWD carries higher maintenance costs but delivers better Canadian winter capability

At Car Inspected, this level of model specific inspection intelligence is standard on every vehicle we assess. Over 10,000 inspections since 2009.

💻 BMW compatible diagnostic scan on this 2021 X5 inspection. And an important teaching moment about what different fault types actually mean.

Here is what the scan revealed on this X5:

⚡ Alternator voltage confirmed normal for cold weather conditions. Voltage readings shift based on ambient temperature. A reading that would be a concern in summer can be perfectly normal in cold conditions. Knowing the context matters
🔧 In the DME (engine control module), we identified intermittent faults during the scan

Here is what most used car buyers, and honestly most casual inspectors, do not understand about diagnostic scans:

🚨 Faults come in different classifications. Active faults are something the vehicle is currently experiencing. Historical faults are recorded events from the past. Intermittent faults are conditions that occur inconsistently, sometimes recurring, sometimes not
🚨 A generic OBD scanner primarily reads active engine codes. It does not typically distinguish between fault classifications, and it does not access non engine modules with the same depth
🚨 Brand compatible diagnostic software, in this case BMW compatible for BMW, accesses every module and displays fault classifications properly, giving the inspector the information required for real interpretation

For a prospective buyer, the difference matters enormously. An active fault often indicates something that needs immediate repair. An intermittent fault requires professional interpretation to determine whether it reflects a real developing issue or a one time event that will not recur. Getting that interpretation wrong in either direction, either dismissing a real concern or panicking over a non issue, has direct financial consequences.

This is one of the fundamental reasons brand compatible diagnostic scanning is standard at Car Inspected on every inspection. Anyone can plug in an OBD reader. Very few inspection providers invest in the brand specific diagnostic infrastructure and the experience required to properly interpret what those scans reveal.

At Car Inspected, this level of scanning depth and interpretation experience is standard across every inspection we deliver. Over 10,000 inspections since 2009. 🔍

💻 Why brand compatible diagnostic software matters during a used car inspection. Here is a real example from our 2012 Honda Civic Coupe inspection.

On this Civic, we ran a full Honda compatible computer scan. Not a generic OBD scan. Here is what came back:

✅ 6 modules scanned across the vehicle
✅ Engine, automatic transmission, ABS, airbag, body, and electrical systems all covered
✅ Only 1 code found, in the engine
✅ That code was RPM higher than expected, which is a temporary code, not a serious concern
✅ All other 5 modules passed with no false faults detected

Here is what most buyers, and honestly most casual inspectors, do not realize:

🚨 A generic OBD scanner primarily reads engine and emissions codes
🚨 That leaves the transmission, ABS, airbag, body control, and electrical modules essentially unchecked
🚨 On a modern vehicle, those unchecked systems represent a huge portion of the actual complexity and potential failure points
🚨 Faults in these other modules often do not trigger the check engine light on the dashboard, meaning they can hide indefinitely

Brand compatible diagnostic software talks to every module in the vehicle. Honda compatible for Honda. Mercedes compatible for Mercedes. GMC compatible for GMC. Each brand requires its own dedicated diagnostic tool to fully access the vehicle's systems.

This is one of the fundamental things that sets Car Inspected apart from generic pre purchase inspections. Anyone can plug in an OBD reader. Very few inspection providers invest in the brand specific diagnostic infrastructure required to actually assess a modern vehicle properly.

At Car Inspected, brand compatible diagnostic scanning is standard on every inspection we conduct. Because a modern used vehicle deserves a modern inspection approach. 🔍

🚨 Clean history report on this 2019 GMC Terrain. But the physical inspection revealed a very different story.

Two important observations worth sharing from this inspection.

On the Terrain lineup itself

This specific vehicle is the front wheel drive configuration. Worth noting that across the Terrain platform, the all wheel drive version equipped with the 2.0 turbo engine is generally considered more reliable than the front wheel drive setup. If you are actively shopping used Terrains, the AWD 2.0T configuration is worth prioritizing when it is available at your target price point.

On the accident history that was not disclosed

The vehicle history report on this Terrain came back clean. Nothing to disclose. Nothing officially recorded. On paper, an unremarkable vehicle history.

But the physical inspection identified damage repair on the rear passenger side quarter panel. Confirmed through paint thickness verification, which reads elevated on repainted or repaired areas compared to original factory paint. The car had been in an accident. The repair was done. The report never captured it.

Here is what every used car buyer needs to understand:

🚨 Vehicle history reports capture what has been officially reported to the system
🚨 Cash based accident repairs regularly escape formal documentation
🚨 Out of network body shops often leave no reportable trail
🚨 The physical evidence of prior work stays on the vehicle regardless of what the report shows

Paint thickness verification is one of the most reliable ways to identify undisclosed repair work. A trained inspector with a proper thickness gauge can walk any vehicle and identify panels that have been refinished, filled, or replaced, even when nothing appears on the report.

At Car Inspected, this level of physical verification is standard on every inspection we conduct. Because the report is a starting point. Physical inspection is what protects the buyer. 🔍

🔧 Used Infiniti QX60 buying guide. Here is what every prospective buyer needs to check on this specific model based on our inspection experience.

The QX60 is a compelling three row luxury SUV option in the Canadian used market. Solid platform, refined ride, and pricing that often makes it more accessible than European luxury alternatives with similar space. But like every vehicle, this specific model has its own signature of items that professional inspection prioritizes.

Here is what we look for on a QX60 inspection:

🔊 Electronic power steering noise. The power steering system is electronic on this platform, and it produces a characteristic noise that any prospective buyer should learn to identify during a test drive. Some noise is normal. Excessive noise is worth investigating

🔧 Rear springs are known to break on the QX60. Documented pattern across the platform. When rear springs fail, the vehicle sits noticeably lower than it should, creating a visible gap difference between front and rear ride height. Easy to spot once you know to look

⚙️ Top mounts are another documented failure point. When top mounts start failing, they produce noise during steering wheel turns and eventually affect ride quality. The vehicle we inspected already had one top mount replaced, which is instructive. Buyers can often see replacement work if they know where to look

🛞 Undercarriage rust assessment. Always worth doing, and here is the practical part that most buyers do not realize. You do not need a lift to see a meaningful portion of the undercarriage. Lay on the ground behind the rear bumper and you can visually inspect a real section of the vehicle underside yourself

There are more items on a full professional inspection, but these are the highest priority items based on our accumulated experience with QX60 inspections.

At Car Inspected, this level of model specific inspection intelligence is what separates a professional assessment from a generic walkaround. Over 10,000 inspections since 2009.

🛞 Two findings from this 2012 Honda Civic Coupe inspection that every prospective used car buyer needs to understand.

Finding one: Tires that are 10 years old

Confirmed as winter tires by the snowflake symbol. But the manufacture date reads the 27th week of 2014. Meaning these tires are approximately 10 years old.

Here is what most drivers do not realize about tire age:

🚨 Rubber compounds degrade with time regardless of visible tread
🚨 After 6 years, tires begin losing their grip and safety properties
🚨 After 10 years, most tire manufacturers and safety organizations recommend replacement regardless of tread condition
🚨 On winter tires specifically, aged rubber loses the flexibility that provides cold weather performance. A 10 year old winter tire performs closer to an all season tire despite the snowflake symbol

For a Canadian driver, this is not a technicality. It is a real safety consideration heading into winter conditions where tire performance directly determines vehicle control.

Finding two: Moderate rear end damage repair

The interior and electronics on this Civic checked out with no major concerns during inspection. Which is genuinely positive. But the exterior walk around revealed moderate damage repair on the rear end, alongside rust findings.

Combined with the recent paint work and the masking tape from that repair still on the vehicle that we documented earlier, the picture of what has actually happened to this car is unmistakable regardless of what the vehicle history report reflects.

At Car Inspected, this kind of layered systematic assessment is standard on every inspection we deliver. Because the details, taken together, tell the real story of a used vehicle. 🔍

🔍 The walk around methodology every used car buyer should know. Continued from our 2021 Audi S5 inspection in Toronto.

The walk around is where used vehicle assessment actually begins. Done properly, it reveals the story of how the car has been treated. Done casually, it misses the details that matter most.

Here is what a proper walk around looks like:

🚶 Move around the entire vehicle at a deliberate pace. Fast enough to see the overall picture. Slow enough to catch what deserves closer attention

👀 Note every scratch, chip, and imperfection systematically. Small marks are normal on any used car and expected wear

📏 Verify paint thickness on every panel using a proper gauge. This is the step that separates normal cosmetic wear from actual repair work

🎨 Understand what your thickness readings mean. Original factory paint reads consistently across panels. Repainted areas show elevated thickness. Body filler shows dramatically different readings

On this S5, we identified small scratches during the walk around. Nothing unusual for a used vehicle at this age and price point. But the important finding was the paint thickness verification. All panels came back consistent with original factory paint across the entire vehicle. Meaning the small scratches are simply cosmetic wear from normal use, not indicators of prior repair or refinishing.

That distinction is exactly why professional inspection matters. A car with small scratches and original paint is an honest, well used vehicle. A car with pristine appearance but repainted panels tells a very different story about what has happened during ownership. Understanding the difference protects the buyer from surprises that a casual walk around would miss entirely.

At Car Inspected, this level of systematic paint condition assessment is standard on every inspection we conduct. Over 10,000 inspections since 2009.

🎨 How to spot car paint repair with your own eyes. No tools required.

Continuing the walkthrough on this 2012 Honda Civic Coupe inspection. The paint repair on the door panel is visible once you know what to look for.

Here is what any prospective used car buyer should learn to check:

🔍 Thickness difference between panels. Even without a professional paint thickness gauge, side by side visual comparison of adjacent panels often reveals inconsistency that indicates repair work

✨ Clear coat coverage. Factory paint has consistent clear coat application. Repainted panels frequently have inconsistent clear coat, and in some cases no clear coat at all. This shows up as differences in gloss, depth of finish, and how light reflects off the surface

🔦 Panel edges and boundaries. Where the original panel meets a repaired area, overspray patterns, mismatched surface texture, and finish variations often become visible

🪞 Component consistency. Side view mirrors that should have cameras, sensors that should be present, and hardware that should match original configuration. Missing or non matching components are often indicators of prior repair work

On this specific Civic, the door panel shows clear signs of paint repair. Combined with the masking tape from the same repair still on the vehicle that we covered previously, the story of what actually happened to this car is unmistakable regardless of what the vehicle history report claims.

At Car Inspected, this kind of layered visual assessment is standard on every inspection we conduct. Because the physical evidence stays on the vehicle, and knowing how to read it is what defines professional pre purchase inspection. 🔍
