Most damage to a car’s paint happens before the detail even starts. Here are 3 things a real detailer does before laying a hand on your car 👇
1️⃣ Always do a walkaround. Go around the car with the owner and look at everything: scratches, chips, curb rash, stains, anything already there. Take photos. That way the owner knows exactly what’s going on with their car and what can be fixed, and there are no surprises at the end.
2️⃣ Check the surface. Is the paint hot? Is the car sitting in direct sun? Washing a hot panel means product dries on it and leaves spots, so if it’s too hot, move the car into the shade or set up a canopy. Look at the paint’s condition too, so you know how hard you can go on it and which products are safe to use.
3️⃣ Get the dirt off without touching it. This is the big one. A pre-rinse and snow foam pull off the sand and grit sitting on the paint first. Go straight in with a mitt and you’re dragging that grit across the clear coat, and that’s where swirl marks come from.
So if you’ve ever wondered why your car looks worse under the sun after a “cheap wash,” that’s usually why.
