Yet another 993 engine going back together after a full rebuild and cleaning of blocked SAI ports. The owner will be able to enjoy the last few weeks of summer driving and be good for another 100,000 miles.

This should never be allowed to happen.
If you own a Porsche Boxster or 911 Cabriolet, always make sure your roof drains are clear.
The consequences of the drains becoming blocked are that the water runs into the floor of the car and swamps the security module, which then needs to be replaced.
The last one I replaced was $2,500 plus programming.

BE WARNED!!!

This isn’t something I expected to find before I stripped the engine on a 1993 928S4 GTS (Japan market)
The customer complaint was high oil consumption, so I figured a top end rebuild and new rings would sort it.
To find such bad scoring was a big and very unwelcome surprise. I’ve seen bad scratching and wear in both 944 and 828 bores over the years but nothing as bad as this.
Maybe I haven’t done enough 928’s but I guess it’s not just 9*6 and 9*7’s that suffer from Alusil bore scoring.
To be continued……….

Before and after pics of a 997 TT rebuild.

Yes I know that a TT is all wheel drive, but if you love your car, DO NOT drive it in winter.

The case in point is that normally to remove a turbocharger when the engine is out of the car, it takes about 30-45 minutes on a only summer driven car.
On this engine it took about 4 hours per side to remove all the oil and coolant lines from the turbos, because they were completely seized and corroded into the turbo housings.
Some of the lines actually had to be cut in order to save the turbochargers and as with almost everything these days the stainless steel lines are certainly not cheap.
We see horrible corrosion on most Porsche sports cars that have been driven in winter. The cost of maintenance more than triples on a winter driven car, so buy a winter be**er if you have to, but leave your Porsche sports car tucked safely away from the salt and "drive it like you stole it" in the good weather months.

IMS failures are still happening, so if your M9*6 or early M9*7 still has it's original IMS bearing take heed. Pay now or 8x more later. Also don't get sucked into installing a cheaper bearing, it's got to be either a LN Engineering retrofit or an IMS Solution, also by LNE, installed by us as we are one of two "LNE Certified Installers" in Quebec.
Like your Porsche, there is no substitute.

When removing the old IMS bearing and the IMS is found to be full of engine oil, it's an indication that the bearing seals have failed and ALL the special grease inside the bearing has been washed out, which is one of the causes of IMS bearing failure.

This particular engine is in a 1999 Boxster and getting treated to a LN Engineering IMS Solution upgrade.

As the old saying goes, "A stitch in time......."
