Quick Tip – Proper Headlight Aim
Brighter headlights don’t always mean better visibility — proper headlight aim makes a big difference.
A common problem is using high beams because the low beams don’t seem bright enough. Keeping high beams on around other vehicles can blind oncoming drivers and make nighttime driving more dangerous.
A simple way to check your headlight aim:
Park on level ground facing a flat wall or garage door, roughly 30 feet away.
Measure the height of your headlights from the ground and mark that height on the wall. Using the brightest part/cutoff of the low-beam pattern as your reference, the beam should generally be aimed slightly below the headlight-height mark, not pointing straight ahead or upward.
Exact adjustment can vary by vehicle, so manufacturer specifications are always the best reference.
Properly aimed headlights give you more useful light on the road while reducing glare for everyone coming toward you.
Before going straight to brighter bulbs, check your headlight aim. A small adjustment can make a big difference.
