The 177th anniversary of the birth of Bertha Benz, 3 May 1849, who laid the foundation for the automotive age with the world's first long-distance drive from Mannheim to Pforzheim in August 1888.
An around 105 km/65 ml journey made without the knowledge of her husband, Carl Benz, but accompanied by her two sons. Although she did leave him a note on the kitchen table to say she was visiting her mother.
Despite decades of hard work, and a patent registered by Carl Benz for the Motor Car on 29 January 1886, nobody had been interested in buying, so Bertha Benz wanted to show the world what the vehicle could do. And she succeeded, making the trip in about 12 hours, and demonstrating the feasibility of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.
Although it was an eventful journey. Mannheim to Pforzheim in Baden-Württemberg on roads normally used by horse and carriage, and unsuitable for a car. With clogged valves, worn wiring, lack of fuel.
Whatever it was, she found a solution to every difficulty. Using a garter, or hat-pin, buying up entire stocks of Ligroin from pharmacies along the route for fuel. Helping push the car for several kilometres when it ran out of fuel completely outside Wiesloch near Heidelberg.
And bringing unexpected fame to Wiesloch town pharmacy where she purchased fuel.
