Ever taken a job just to get a better price on a new truck?? Lol I know it seems in hindsight to be a bad reason but todays guest Greg Hilliard from London Ontario actually tried it. Now Greg is like me a tech that came from the highway truck side of the industry before finding his way in the automotive side and now hes one of those rare shops in smaller community's where hes fixing everything in the community from their powerstroke diesel to their farm tractor to someone's boat. He's built himself a business like alot of us remember being more common but as we embrace "progress" shops like this are going away. Greg shares what was the final straw that pushed him into business ownership and what his hopes for the future are going forward. I know sometimes it seems like we rip on small operators in this industry but never forget that the we respect the grind and the hustle that so many small operators bring to the workplace every day. The hope is Greg can join me next spring at TOOLS by MAACA and we can introduce him to so many of my friends in the industry. We're hoping to record a bunch more episodes in the next month before fishing season ramps up so if you're on the fence about being a guest get down off the post and reach out to me. As always thank you to all my family and friends that sponsor the podcast. Without you we wouldn't be able to do this. LAUNCH Tech USA Tekmetric Promotive thank you.

This is why confirming your fix and and picking the oe part is so critical these days with your diag. Don't overthink it and go down a rabbit hole if you have a dtc return. Follow the process, do your quality control and dont waste times with cheaper available parts that may not fix the dtc.

EVAP Large leak codes are supposed to be simple, right? Smoke the system, find the leak, fix the leak.

Except this one passed the smoke test.

This turned into a great training moment with Beau and a reminder for every rookie tech out there: don’t stop testing just because the first test passed, and don’t assume the new part is good just because it’s new.

The original failure was proven, the repair was made, and then the recheck showed the new part had created another problem.

That last confirmation step matters. More info ⬇️

Sure, every technician may not like the engineer, but when managers come in acting like they know what they're doing, but they don't that's frustrating.

After a stop at FedEx, an unexpected opportunity led him back into automotive at a Stellantis dealership, where he’s found constant learning, new challenges, and a career he genuinely enjoys. Derek’s story is a reminder that perspective can change everything. Check out the full episode now.
