SkyTrain service between Vancouver and Burnaby was disrupted Wednesday morning after a fire near Gilmore Station caused heavy smoke and forced multiple station closures.

TransLink suspended Millennium Line service at Gilmore Station around 5:50 a.m., with Brentwood, Gilmore and Rupert stations closed until further notice. Extra buses and transit staff were deployed to help affected commuters, while crews investigated the fire and inspected infrastructure before reopening the stations. The Expo Line and Canada Line continued operating normally. TransLink has not yet confirmed when regular service will resume.

An Alberta man has been arrested in Vancouver after allegedly robbing a bank in the city's West End neighbourhood on October 30.

Vancouver police responded to reports of a robbery in progress at a bank on Robson Street near Bute Street around 3:30 p.m. Investigators say the suspect entered the bank, demanded cash from a teller and fled on foot. Officers quickly searched the surrounding area and located the man within 10 minutes of receiving the emergency call. The suspect was taken into custody and is now facing robbery charges.

A 42-year-old man in Abbotsford, B.C., received a 90-day driving ban after allegedly driving impaired directly to a police station to report his missing cellphone.

The man arrived at Abbotsford Police headquarters around 2 a.m. Sunday after reportedly losing his phone following a night at a bar. An officer noticed his pickup truck being driven on the sidewalk inside the police parking lot and approached him after he exited the vehicle. Police detected signs of alcohol impairment, and the man subsequently failed a breathalyzer test. His truck was impounded for 30 days, while police highlighted the unusual circumstances of an impaired driver bringing himself directly to their station.

A British Columbia family is calling for stricter trapping regulations after their beloved farm dog died in a legally placed snare trap near their home outside Williams Lake.

The dog, Berta, was found dead on Oct. 19 after becoming caught in a trap set on Crown land just 280 metres from the family’s residence. Under current B.C. regulations, traps can be placed as close as 200 metres from homes and do not require warning signs. Animal welfare organization The Fur-Bearers says an average of eight dogs have died annually in fur traps over the past decade and is urging the province to restrict trapping near residential areas and recreational trails. The family hopes Berta’s death will lead to changes that prevent similar tragedies.

A man convicted of carrying out a terrorist attack on a Surrey transit bus has been sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison for attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Abdul Aziz Kawam, 30, was convicted in connection with an April 2023 attack in which he slashed a stranger's throat aboard a public bus after attempting to attack another man. A B.C. Supreme Court judge determined that Kawam acted in support of the Islamic State terrorist group, citing his statements pledging allegiance to its leader. The court considered his history of mental illness as a mitigating factor during sentencing. After receiving credit for time already served, Kawam has approximately 11 years and three months remaining in prison and faces deportation afterward.

The Vancouver Aquarium is mourning the loss of Hurricane, a beloved two-toed sloth who has died at the age of 29 after spending years bringing joy to visitors and staff.

Hurricane was one of the aquarium’s most cherished residents, known for her curious personality and close relationships with her keepers and trainers. In her later years, she received specialized geriatric care and actively participated in health monitoring, including blood tests and ultrasounds. The aquarium paid tribute to the countless memories she created, saying her presence touched the lives of visitors and staff alike. Hurricane will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

More than 150 students and chaperones were rescued after a graduation cruise boat ran aground in Burrard Inlet near North Vancouver on Friday night.

The catamaran Pride of Vancouver was carrying a group from Sutherland Secondary School for a dinner and dance celebration when it struck a sandbar near Maplewood Flats around 8:25 p.m. Emergency crews, including the Canadian Coast Guard, RCMP and marine search and rescue teams, responded to evacuate passengers using a hovercraft capable of operating in shallow water. Everyone was safely brought ashore by approximately 12:10 a.m., with no injuries or pollution reported. The vessel was later refloated with the rising tide.

Health care has become a major issue in British Columbia’s upcoming provincial election, with political parties promising changes to address doctor shortages, emergency room closures and access to medical services.

More than 1.2 million British Columbians remain without a family doctor, despite recent efforts to improve health-care access. The B.C. NDP says it has connected 700,000 additional residents with family doctors or nurse practitioners over the past three years while expanding services and simplifying licensing for internationally trained physicians. Meanwhile, the B.C. Conservatives are promising to maintain universal, publicly funded health care and establish an expert commission to identify improvements within their first 100 days in office.

Four people were hospitalized, including three in critical condition, following a serious crash on the Coquihalla Highway north of Merritt, B.C., Saturday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the collision near Exit 315 at Helmer Road around 8:35 a.m. Paramedics treated four people at the scene, with three transported to hospital in critical condition, including two by air ambulance. A fourth person was hospitalized in stable condition. The crash forced the closure of a 30-kilometre stretch of the highway between Helmer Road and Merritt for more than six hours before reopening around 3:30 p.m.
