Shortly after birth, Caroline was airlifted nearly halfway across Maine to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, where she spent her first eight weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Diagnosed with Down syndrome and a serious heart defect, Caroline underwent open-heart surgery at Boston Children's Hospital, leading to countless hours on the road for her family. Then, at just two and a half years old, she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, bringing even more travel for specialized medical care.

During this challenging time, Caroline's family turned to our company's Fuel the Care program to help offset the cost of travelling to and from the hospital.

Since 2002, Fuel the Care has provided fuel gift cards to more than 120,000 families across Eastern Canada, New England and Ireland who must travel for their children's medical treatment.

"While her medical journey continues, she has already overcome so much," says Caroline's mother, Anne. "The Fuel the Care gift cards were a blessing every single time we received them."

Knowing the program was helping cover these unexpected travel costs gave Anne one less thing to worry about as she focused on her daughter's care. Today, Caroline is cancer-free and thriving in school while Anne has returned to her teaching career — right next door to her daughter.

Annabel Akinlabi is one of 40 co-op students who joined our company this fall. A Marketing student at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, she is spending her term with our Agency Services team at our home office in Saint John, NB.

Working alongside Creative Designers, Marketing Communications Specialists, Photographers and Videographers, Annabel is helping to bring marketing projects to life.

"I'm excited to join Irving Oil and gain hands-on experience in marketing while learning from talented professionals across the company," she says.

As a presenting sponsor for 15 years, our teams were happy to take part in the Truck Convoy for Special Olympics Nova Scotia once again.

For Mike Reid, Manager of Fleet Maintenance in Dartmouth, NS, this event in support of local athletes has become a highlight he looks forward to each year.

Moments after birth, baby Hudson was airlifted nearly halfway across Newfoundland and Labrador to Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre – a five-hour drive that would become a familiar trek for the family.

Diagnosed with Down syndrome, Hudson later needed open-heart surgery. As his family prepared for the operation, his older brother, Hunter, suffered life-threatening injuries in a dirt bike accident.

Within months, the siblings were hospitalized on the same floor at the Janeway. While Hunter fought for his life, Hudson was experiencing heart failure.

"Fuel the Care was such a huge relief. It took an incredible burden off my shoulders," says their mother, Megan, a single mother of four.

Since 2002, Irving Oil's Fuel the Care program has provided fuel gift cards to more than 120,000 families across Eastern Canada, New England and Ireland who need to travel for their children's medical care.

As we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we take time to reflect on the lasting impacts of the residential school system and to honour the strength, resilience and contributions of Indigenous Peoples and communities across Canada.

In honour of this day, we're illuminating the tanks at our Saint John refinery and our home office in orange.

We also recently welcomed author David A. Robertson, a member of Norway House Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba, to speak to our employees. Through storytelling and personal reflection, he encouraged employees to deepen their understanding of Indigenous experiences and consider the role each of us can play in advancing reconciliation.
