STARTING VEHICLES IN COLD WEATHER

Here are a few tips I have for anyone who wants their vehicle to start no matter how cold it gets. Some of this may be common knowledge for alot of people but it definitely is not for others.

ENGINE OIL: synthetic is always the best choice, yes it costs more. It especially helps the engine turn over when the temperature drops, even if you just use it in the winter months. You *might* be able to use thinner oil as well like a 0w20 or 0w40 etc. check your owners manual there may be a chart showing what oil you can use in what ambient temperature - always use the correct oil recommended by the manufacturer.

BATTERY: AGM batteries are a superior choice over standard lead acid, again they do cost more. They handle the cold much better and have a longer lifespan. And if your battery is over 5 years old it’s probably time to start thinking about replacing it anyway. The higher the CCA rating (cold cranking amps) the better, regardless what type of battery you use.

BLOCK HEATER: obviously when it’s -20c or worse you want to plug in the block heater if possible, atleast a few hours before hand (the longer the better) If your not sure if it’s working or not it can be tested simply by checking the resistance of the two main terminals on the cable (vehicle side) using a multimeter. generally somewhere between 10-50 ohms depending on the vehicle.

BATTERY BLANKET/WARMER: this is not something vehicles come with from the factory, but they work wonders on all types of batteries and don’t cost very much, and can be installed easily usually in a few minutes. It wraps around the battery to keep it warm, and plugs in like a block heater. To make things easier you can get a short outdoor extension cord with multiple female ends and one male end. Plug the block heater and the warmer into the extension cord then you only have to plug the single cord in to turn them both on at the same time. It doesn’t use much power, and shouldn’t even come close to tripping the circuit breaker even with both running.

OIL PAN HEATER: this is another one that does not come from the factory, and if your vehicle doesn’t have a block heater (or even if it does) it can be a great option. You can get magnetic ones if you have a STEEL oil pan or other kinds that can be installed with high temperature silicone to plastic or aluminum pans.

BOOSTING: if you need a boost or have to boost someone, connect the positive cable ends first then the negative. increase the RPM of the boosting vehicle to approx 2000RPM as this is generally around where maximum output of the alternator is achieved. You may want to leave it for a few minutes before even trying to start the dead vehicle. Bigger vehicles like trucks, or especially diesels which have dual batteries and sometimes dual alternators will do a much better job of boosting.

Stay warm out there, hope this helps everyone out

Always pay the extra vehicle inspection report. From family, friends, or even dealerships..

Because that Inspection fee will or can save you money in the long run.
