Ontario has introduced a digital safety inspection process. How is this done?
Besides taking a test drive and inspection of the interior and exterior, the vehicle is lifted for an underbody inspection. This includes checking the steering, suspension, brakes, tires, wheels, lines, mounts and other safety components beneath the vehicle. The technician will record tire tread depth, tire pressure, and brake measurements.
As part of the digital inspection, the technician must also take pictures of the tire tread depth and brake component measurements. Once the inspection is complete, the technician will decide whether the vehicle passes or fails based on the government's standards. A copy of the inspection results will be provided to the vehicle owner. If the vehicle fails, we'll discuss the issues with the owner and plan the next steps.
If the vehicle passes, the technician will sign the inspection certificate, and a digital copy will be uploaded to the licensing office.
