Two right side pictures of the KL prototype that would pave the way in the early ‘50’s for the “K” models and later the Ironhead Sportster line; first is the complete running motor assembly, picture probably taken in late ‘40’s or early ‘50’s and the second, just cases and cylinders, is believed to be around the ‘70’s to early ‘80’s in Harley’s engineering department! This unit would in later years find its way to the Wall of Power display at the Harley-Davidson museum in Milwaukee where it still resides today. Read more about the KL prototype from a post on Mostly Ironheads page about this bikes history: Jan. 9, 2021

Someone asked how Harley-Davidson came up with such an awesome and cool name as the “Sportster” for their new mid-size overhead valve motorcycle in 1957 and if you look at where the Sportster came from it’s very easy to see the origin of this famous name! Prior to the Sportster we had the K model which debuted in 1952; it wasn’t very powerful and only did something like 16.8 seconds in the quarter mile! But in 1953 Harley brought out the KK model which had KR style racing cams, WR racing valves, etc…and this paved the way for the next generation of K’s in ‘54 to ‘56; the stroked KH and KHK’s. A KH was run in the quarter mile at 14.75 which was 1/2 a second slower than the stripped down, bare bones 1958 XLCH!! Imagine if they’d run and timed a KHK on the quarter mile strip that was even more powerful than the KH!! But back to where that iconic name came from, Harley called their hotrod flatheads the KH Sport and the KHK Super Sport so the “Sport” name was already being used for these fast and powerful K models, then when Harley-Davidson decided to put overhead valve heads on their unit construction flatheads the “Sport” name was already well liked and established with the later 54ci KH / KHK models and so I believe that the name “Sportster” was an obvious and perfect choice for the next generation, our beloved ironheads!

Great write up about the 4th annual Ironhead Rendezvous by Jerry Jackson in the XL Forum.

Who would of known it would of grown to this when Halfdead Dom created the Ironhead Owners of Ontario with the collaboration of Lloyd Gadd and Scott Fisher.

Looking forward to our 5th anniversary Ironhead Rendezvous!

This year’s 4th Annual Ironhead Rendezvous was the best yet, many classic and vintage ironheads were on hand for today’s get together; including the Sportster’s grandfather, a beautiful antique 1939 WL and also the father, a very rare 1952 K model!! Also present was a classic 1977 XLCR cafe racer and an awesome 1979 XLS with the original Siamese exhaust system. Lots of other very cool ironheads with their riders were present today, including our new long distance rider guest from Pennsylvania, Jerry Jackson on a very original Birch white 1969 XLCH!!! The weather was awesome, no rain forecast and no humidity, great BBQ and meal (courtesy of Scott and Dom), and the perfect day for probably the largest gathering of Ironhead Sportsters ever in Ontario, maybe even Canada?? Next year can only be better

Would this possibly be classified as an Ironhead?? Maybe!!

Starting to get some progress done on my ‘67 CH; advance/retard left grip hookup, spring cushioned oil tank mount and many other small details that’ll make this long time bike project of mine finally become a running reality

This has been a hard bike to get running, had to change out the carb as the original carbs main jet came out in two pieces!!!!! She likes a lot of gas to start and the Bendix isn’t really snappy on the accelerator but at least she’s running!
