📣📣📣What Actually Happens When You Overfill a Vacuum Tank?

It’s tempting to squeeze in just a little more. But when a vacuum tank reaches capacity, that extra few gallons can turn into a much bigger problem.

Here’s what’s actually happening:
💧 1. Liquid reaches the primary shutoff
The primary shutoff is the first line of protection. As the liquid level rises, the floatball closes off airflow to help prevent tank contents from travelling toward the pump
⚠️ 2. Carryover can reach the secondary
Any liquid that makes it past the primary can enter the secondary shutoff. The secondary is another line of defense, designed to remove liquid from the air stream before it reaches the vacuum pump.
🛑 3. The secondary can shut the vacuum off
On a float-style secondary shut-off, incoming liquid raises the float until it seals the vacuum line, helping prevent liquid from being pulled into the pump. [
💸 4. Push past the protection and things get expensive
Don't overlook your shutoffs. They're there to protect one of the most important components on your truck. Keeping both clean, maintained, and functioning properly is critical. They're relatively simple components, but they're standing between an overfilled tank and a potentially expensive pump problem.

🔧 The takeaway?
Don't treat your shutoffs as your fill gauge.
Watch your tank level, know your truck's usable capacity, keep your primary and secondary shutoffs clean and operating properly, and don't try to squeeze in that “last little bit.”

A few extra gallons aren't worth risking your vacuum system. Have you ever had a secondary shutoff save your pump?

📣📣📣VacuNews: Manufacturing for Canadian Winters 📣📣📣

When winter hits, your equipment doesn't get a day off. That's why building vacuum trucks for Canadian conditions means thinking far beyond the first snowfall.

At Vacutrux, winter-ready design starts in the manufacturing process. From heated components and freeze protection systems to durable tank construction and corrosion-resistant finishes, every detail matters when temperatures drop and the job still needs to get done.

The goal isn't just to survive winter. It's to keep working through it safely and efficiently.

Here are a few real-world winter tips every vacuum truck operator should keep in mind:
✅ Drain water systems whenever possible. Even a small amount of trapped water can freeze and crack fittings, sight tubes, gauges, and plumbing.
✅ Check tank heaters and heated collars before the first cold snap. Don't wait until temperatures drop below freezing to find out something isn't working. Check that the winter isolation valves have been turned back on from summer settings.
✅ Keep vacuum pump oil fresh. Cold weather thickens oil, making startup harder and reducing lubrication when your pump needs it most.
✅ Inspect door seals and gaskets. A small leak can freeze shut overnight and create headaches at the next job.
✅ Watch your air-operated valves. Moisture in air systems can freeze and prevent valves from operating properly.
✅ Don't ignore battery health. Batteries that seem fine in October can struggle when temperatures hit -20°C.
✅ Wash road salt off your truck regularly. Corrosion never sleeps, and winter is when it does the most damage.

Whether you're pumping septic tanks, servicing portable toilets, supporting municipalities, or handling industrial waste, dependable equipment can make the difference between a productive day and an expensive breakdown.

VacuNews: Why Weld Quality Matters

At Vacutrux, welding isn't just another step in the manufacturing process. It's one of the most critical.

When you're dealing with vacuum, pressure, liquid waste, or industrial materials down the road, your tank is only as strong as the welds holding it together.

Every seam, baffle, stiffening ring, nozzle, and reinforcement depends on weld quality. Poor welds can lead to cracks, leaks, costly repairs, downtime, and in severe cases, compromised structural integrity.

Our team of welders bring years of experience, technical skill, and attention to detail to every tank that leaves our facility. From precise fit-up and preparation to consistent weld pe*******on and finish quality, they take pride in building equipment that performs in demanding real-world conditions. The result?

✅ Stronger tanks
✅ Better durability
✅ Longer service life
✅ Less downtime
✅ Greater confidence on the job

A vacuum truck works hard every day. The welds need to work even harder.

Behind every Vacutrux tank is a team of top-tier welders committed to craftsmanship, quality, and building equipment that operators can rely on for years to come.

🤔 Question: should I spec full height baffles or tank stiffener rings on my next vacuum tank?

To help break this down its best if we define the difference between a standard septic truck and a vacuum truck used for hauling heavy materials; sand, gravel, sludge.

⚙️ Full Height Baffle: A standard vacuum tank for septic service traditionally has multiple full height internal baffles. The baffles help with liquid surge front to back when material is transported down the road especially when the tank is not fully loaded. An internal baffle also gives the tank strength under vacuum.

⚙️ Stiffening Rings: When a vacuum tank is manufacturered for industrial use hauling heavy materials it is common to build with a half or partial baffle. This allows heavy material to flow free when the tank is tilted with a hoist. To give the tank proper support under vacuum external stiffener ring are used.

⚙️ Combo Setup: Some manufactures install both full height baffles, and stiffener rings. Alot of times this comes down to customer preference and tank material. When constructing an aluminum tank it is important to build with full height baffles and stiffener rings either external or internal for strength under vacuum.

🔑 Key Takeaway: Tank material and truck vocation are the most important consideration!

Question: Galvanized vs non galvanized tanks, what’s the real difference?

Two vacuum tanks. Same steel. Same capacity. Very different lifespan.

Here's why more operators are looking at galvanized tanks when spec'ing their next truck,

✅Better Corrosion Resistance - The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial layer protecting the steel underneath from road salt, Calcium chloride, softener salt, winter brine and cleaning chemicals.

✅Less Worry About Chips & Scratches - A paint chip on a non-galvanized tank can become a rust starting point. Galvanizing continues to protect surrounding areas even when the surface gets nicked.

✅Longer Service Life - Many operators plan to keep their trucks for years and even plan to move a vacuum system from one chassis to the next. Slowing corrosion means protecting your investment for the long haul.

✅Improved Appearance Over Time - Galvanized tanks tend to maintain a cleaner, more uniform appearance as they age, especially in regions where trucks see regular exposure to salt and moisture.

✅Higher Resale Appeal - When buyers are comparing used trucks, a galvanized tank with less corrosion can be a major selling point.

⚠️ Does that mean non-galvanized tanks are bad?
Absolutely not. A well-built, properly maintained painted tank can provide years of reliable service. But for operators looking to maximize longevity and corrosion protection, galvanized construction is often worth serious consideration.

💬 If you're spec'ing a new vacuum truck, what matters most to you? Lower initial cost or maximum long-term durability?
