Fudge's Garage

Fudge's Garage A page to keep people updated on the work I'm doing on various motorcycle projects. If you own or like bikes, come over and hang out.

If you need work done or custom painting, I can do that, too.

It started off simple enough - fix the blown head gasket. But, as Mike says, I got a case of the 'may as wells.' So, I thought I may as well do some brake work, some painting, porting, polishing, welding, machining, wiring, cabling, fuel line work, and so on. Oh, and replace some gaskets.

I have added a lot of photos to this album and numbered them in an attempt to keep the timeline of repairs in order. There were plenty of other things I could have added to the album, but I'm pretty high on exhaust fumes right now.

The heart of the Deadbeat is about to come out; thanks to a blown head gasket, tonight the motor and transmission are getting pulled.

At least that means my forgotten "Fudge's Garage" page will get some updates!

The poor ol' Deadbeat, it really wants to go for a ride.

Project Ironhead is done. As expected, it behaves like one would expect from an old-school bobber: no power, noisy, smelly, drips oil, shakes and rattles, is quirky to drive, the brakes are semi-useless, the chain slaps around, and occasionally likes to kick back when starting it (it's kick-start only). I have dubbed it 'The Deadbeat.'

Whipping up a custom rear fender.

To everyone who has followed my posts and updates regarding Project Ironhead, I apologise that I have not provided any updates recently. At first, I wanted to keep the paint job under wraps until I had the machine assembled, but now it's because the bike has been prepped to pass a provincial inspection and, quite frankly, looks ridiculous with all of the retro-fitted components on it. Once I have the inspection completed, I will put the bike in the final, Fudge-worthy configuration followed by flooding this page with photographs.

On the plus side, I have tuned the engine and it starts beautifully with a single shot of the kick-start.

Things are moving along nicely now. I am about ready to get this thing running, but the paint and clearcoat needs to be finished. I had hoped that the long weekend would have gotten me there, but some struggles with lettering / masking slowed things down a bit. I have also begun wiring, but I will refrain from posting photos for the time being (well, I didn't take pictures, actually).

The photos might suggest otherwise, but Ironhead is almost ready to be put on the road. As of right now, it is completely disassembled to paint everything (no pictures yet); by Saturday, the paint will have hardened enough to put it back together and get it running. Initially, I need to make it inspection-legal - the bike hasn't been registered (or running) since 1991, and it was a much different machine back then.

Despite Taylor's coy exterior, she's pretty pumped with how awesome the bike looks.

I've got it put together to check hose and cable lengths and to let me figure out what components I still need. I also need things assembled so I can build the su***de shifter which needs to clear the exhaust, keg oil tank, and kickstart all the while being easily reachable from a riding position.

It's been a busy (week? two weeks?) in the garage; there are some other works in progress that I haven't included here (like the battery box and carb mount), but things are coming along nicely.
