These are dark days in the Alberta towing industry.

Alberta’s professional towing industry is facing a critical moment.

The professional towing companies of Alberta are facing a challenging reality in the wake of the newly implemented Vehicle Towing and Storage Regulations.

The Government of Alberta, in an earnest effort to address the criminal behaviour of a small group of bad actors, has introduced regulations that are now placing a significant and, in many cases, unrealistic administrative burden on legitimate operators across the province.

The companies working to comply with these regulations are the very same ones that have consistently followed the rules—operating with integrity, transparency, and accountability for decades. Many have been serving their communities for 20, 30, 40—even 70 years. These are multi-generational family businesses that have endured economic downturns, inflation, the pandemic, and volatile fuel markets—and kept showing up.

They are the operators who answer the call in the worst conditions—on the side of a rural highway in the middle of a winter storm, in moments of stress and uncertainty, when safety is on the line.

The concern now is not with the intent of the legislation, but with its impact.

The administrative requirements are creating real strain for small and medium-sized operators. Increased paperwork, new processes, and compliance systems are reducing efficiency and increasing costs at a time when many businesses are already under pressure.

For many, the full impact is only now becoming clear as they work through what is required to meet these new standards.

There is a clear distinction between those who operate with professionalism and accountability, and those whose actions prompted these changes. The challenge now is ensuring that the response does not disproportionately impact the very companies that have long upheld the standards of this industry.

We believe there is an opportunity to ensure that the regulations achieve their intended purpose—without placing undue burden on those who are already doing things the right way.

We welcome constructive dialogue and encourage operators across Alberta to share their experiences, challenges, and insights.

We also encourage owners and proprietors across Alberta to reach out to their Alberta Government representatives and communicate their concerns directly—particularly around the administrative burden being placed on responsible operators.
