🔊 YOUR ENGINE HAS A STETHOSCOPE — AND IT'S LISTENING FOR TROUBLE

Think about how noisy an engine is.

Injectors clicking. Valves moving. Pistons changing direction thousands of times per minute. Timing chains spinning. Accessories turning. Combustion happening inside multiple cylinders.

And buried in all that mechanical chaos is a little sensor whose job is essentially:

👂 "Listen for one particular noise."

That's the knock sensor.

Knock sensors are typically piezoelectric sensors mounted directly to the engine. Vibrations from the engine deform a piezoelectric element inside the sensor, which generates an electrical signal the engine computer can analyze.

The computer is specifically interested in vibrations associated with detonation — or "knock."

Knock occurs when combustion doesn't happen the way the engine was designed for it to happen. Instead of a nice, controlled flame front spreading through the cylinder, abnormal combustion can create sharp pressure spikes.

That's bad news for an engine.

So when the computer detects knock, it can respond by retarding ignition timing to help protect the engine.

And here's the really cool part:

The computer isn't simply asking:

"Is the engine making noise?"

Of course it is.

It's looking for particular vibration characteristics, during particular operating conditions and at particular times in the combustion cycle.

Imagine standing beside a running engine while someone shakes a toolbox full of sockets…

…and being asked to listen for one guy tapping a quarter against the engine block.

That's basically a knock sensor's entire career. 😂

❄️ YOUR A/C COMPRESSOR CAN BE RUNNING… AND STILL NOT BE DOING MUCH

For years, automotive A/C systems were relatively straightforward.

When cooling was needed, the compressor clutch engaged.

Click. Compressor ON.
Click. Compressor OFF.

So if you looked under the hood and saw the compressor spinning, that told you something useful.

On many modern vehicles, though?

Not so much.

Some vehicles use a variable-displacement A/C compressor. Instead of simply switching on and off, the compressor can change how much refrigerant it pumps.

At low demand, it might barely be doing anything.

When more cooling is needed, its output increases.

The vehicle can adjust that output based on things like cabin temperature, evaporator temperature, refrigerant pressure, engine load and what you're asking for at the climate controls.

Here's where diagnosis gets interesting:

A variable-displacement compressor can be physically spinning but producing little or no useful pressure difference.

So:

👀 "The compressor is turning."

…doesn't necessarily mean…

👍 "The compressor is working."

That's why diagnosing modern A/C systems involves looking at pressures, temperatures, sensor data, control commands and actual system performance—not simply checking whether the compressor is spinning.

Modern vehicles have gotten very good at making seemingly simple systems surprisingly complicated.

Fortunately, figuring out why something isn't working is the fun part. 😎🔧

🔧 THE FAILED PART MIGHT JUST BE THE VICTIM

When a part fails, the obvious solution seems pretty simple:

Find the broken part. Replace the broken part. Done.

Except sometimes…the broken part wasn't actually the cause of the problem.

It was the victim.

For example:

💧 A water pump may fail prematurely because of excessive corrosion caused by acidic coolant.

⚡ An alternator may fail because engine oil has been leaking into it.

🛞 A wheel bearing can have a shortened life because of large wheel spacers adding extra tension.

🔥 A catalytic converter can fail because an engine has been misfiring and sending unburned fuel into the exhaust.

🔋 A battery may repeatedly go dead because another component isn't shutting down when the vehicle is parked.

In each of these cases, replacing the failed part might get the vehicle working again....

But if we don't figure out what killed it, the replacement may eventually suffer the exact same fate.

That's one of the reasons automotive diagnosis isn't always about finding what's broken.

Sometimes the more important question is:

🔎 "Why did it break?"

Because the dead part isn't always the murderer.

First, I’d Like to Apologize for the Interrogation…

When you tell us your vehicle is making a noise, hesitating, vibrating, or doing something else it shouldn’t, I may respond with enough questions to make it feel like you’ve suddenly become the prime suspect.

- When did it start?
- Does it happen when the vehicle is cold or hot?
- While accelerating or coasting?
- Turning left or turning right?
- At a particular speed?
- Is the road smooth or bumpy?
- Does it happen every time?
- Can you make it happen on purpose?
- Has anything recently been repaired or changed?

I promise—We're not trying to catch you in a lie. We're trying to help catch your vehicle in the act.

A symptom that appears only when cold may lead us down a very different diagnostic path than one that begins after the vehicle warms up. A noise while turning left may point us toward a different area than the same noise while turning right. A vibration under acceleration tells us something different than one that occurs while coasting.

The easier it is for us to recreate the concern, the sooner we can begin testing the systems most likely to be involved.

Without those details, diagnosis may begin with a much wider search. That can mean additional road testing, more systems to inspect, and more time spent waiting for the symptom to appear.

You don’t need to tell us what’s causing the problem—that’s our job to find out and inform you. Just tell us what happens, when it happens, and what seems to make it better or worse.

The more useful information you can give us up front, the more focused the diagnostic process can be—and the more money it may save you.

So yes, there may be a few questions.
But we promise, after that, you’re free to go.

“While We’re in There…”—Helpful Advice or an Upsell?

Few phrases in automotive repair can make people suspicious quite as quickly as:

“While we’re in there…”

But sometimes, taking care of an additional part during the original repair can save a significant amount of labour later.

Imagine replacing an inexpensive seal that normally takes several hours to reach. If we already have those components removed for another repair, replacing that seal now might add only the cost of the part and a few minutes of labour.

The same can apply to things like:

🔧 Timing-belt tensioners and water pumps (it would take a lot of convincing to get me to change ONLY the belt)
⚙️ Seals found to be leaking, hidden behind major components
🔩 Worn hardware that has already been removed
💧 Aging hoses beneath an intake manifold
🔌 Difficult-to-access sensors or connectors
🧰 Related components with a similar service life (such as heater cores and evaporators, spark plugs and wires, and in certain cases where a bumper needs to be removed for access, headlight/turn signal bulbs)

That doesn’t mean everything nearby should automatically be replaced.

A sensible “while we’re in there” recommendation should consider:

✅ The condition and age of the part
✅ How likely it is to fail
✅ How much duplicated labour it could prevent
✅ Whether failure could damage anything else
✅ How long you intend to keep the vehicle
✅ Your budget and priorities

We should also be able to explain what we found, why we recommend addressing it, what it adds to that day’s repair, and what it may cost if completed separately later.

Sometimes the best decision is to replace the part now. Sometimes it’s perfectly reasonable to leave it alone.

The important part is having enough information to make that choice for yourself.

Why Do Electrical Problems Come and Go?

You start the car... and the warning light is gone.

The window works again. The radio turns back on. The vehicle starts perfectly. Whatever happened must have fixed itself… right?

Unfortunately, electrical problems rarely heal on their own.

Intermittent faults can appear and disappear because of:

⚡ Loose or poorly fitting connections
🌡️ Wires and terminals expanding with heat
💧 Moisture entering connectors or modules
🟢 Corrosion creating extra resistance
🚗 Vibration temporarily making or breaking contact
🔌 Damaged wires that only fail when bent a certain way
🔋 Low voltage affecting sensitive electronics
🧠 Modules occasionally losing communication

These problems can change with temperature, road conditions, vehicle movement, or even how the wiring harness happens to be sitting that day.

That’s also what makes them difficult to diagnose. A complete failure can usually be tested while it’s happening. An intermittent fault may behave perfectly once the vehicle reaches the shop, leaving behind only a stored code—or sometimes no obvious evidence at all.

Finding it may require recreating the right conditions, monitoring live data, testing individual circuits, moving wiring and connectors, or keeping the vehicle long enough for the fault to return.

So if you notice an electrical problem, make note of when it happened, what the vehicle was doing, the weather, and which other systems were affected. Photos and videos can also be extremely helpful.

“It’s working now” is useful information—but it isn’t always the same as “it’s fixed.”

What’s Hiding Behind Your Dashboard?

From the driver’s seat, the dashboard looks like a collection of vents, buttons, screens, and gauges.

Behind it? It’s basically an automotive game of Tetris.

Depending on the vehicle, that space may contain:

🔧 The heater core and A/C evaporator
🌬️ The blower motor and HVAC housing
⚙️ Air-direction and temperature actuators
🧠 Control modules and communication wiring
⚡ Fuse panels, connectors, and wiring harnesses
🛡️ Airbags and structural supports
📻 Audio, navigation, and infotainment components
🎛️ Instrument-cluster and steering-column electronics

When something behind the dash stops working, diagnosis can take time because the problem may involve a failed component, damaged wiring, a communication fault, a restricted passage—or a tiny plastic door buried deep inside the HVAC housing.

Once the problem is identified, accessing it may be the bigger job. A relatively inexpensive part can require hours of careful disassembly because much of the dashboard, centre console, or steering-column trim may need to come apart first.

Then everything has to be reassembled correctly—with the wiring routed properly, the airbags and safety systems undisturbed, and no mysterious new rattles joining you on the drive home.

Sometimes the cost of a repair isn’t about the size or price of the failed part. It’s about everything standing between us and getting our hands on it.

When Paint Starts Peeling—Who’s to Blame?

When paint or clear coat begins peeling from a vehicle, it’s easy to assume the owner neglected it. But sometimes, the problem started before the vehicle ever left the factory.

Automotive paint is a layered system:

- A corrosion-resistant coating protects the bare metal.
- Primer helps create a smooth, bondable surface.
- The base coat provides the colour.
- Clear coat adds gloss and protection from UV light, weather, and chemicals.

If those layers are contaminated, applied too thinly, improperly cured, or fail to bond correctly during manufacturing, they can eventually separate. Sunlight, heat, road salt, pressure washing, and years of weather exposure may accelerate the failure—but they aren’t necessarily its original cause.

Toyota provides a well-known Canadian example. Certain 2008–2017 RAV4s—and several other Toyota, Lexus, and Scion models—painted in Super White (040) or Blizzard Pearl (070) were included in a warranty-enhancement program for factory paint peeling. Toyota reported that sunlight could gradually weaken the bond between the primer and the metal’s protective coating, allowing the paint to peel away in sheets.

In Canada, eligibility depended on the individual vehicle, so owners were required to contact a Toyota dealer with their VIN. Although, typically, Toyota would only cover the concern for up to 10 years after the manufacture date of the vehicle, I would still strongly encourage anyone with this issue to contact Toyota Canada. Even if the published coverage appears expired, it costs nothing to have the VIN checked.

Waxing and proper washing can help good paint last longer—but no amount of detailing can permanently correct a failed bond underneath it.

If your paint is peeling unusually, check with the manufacturer using your VIN. There may be a warranty extension or customer-support program, even if the regular vehicle warranty has expired.
