π§ STARTING TO SKID? EASE OFF, AND STEER WHERE YOU WANT TO GO.
The frost is back, the leaves are wet, and the first black ice of the season is forming β usually on bridges, overpasses, and shady patches that freeze before the rest of the road. That means less grip and a higher chance of a skid. Here's how to handle one calmly:
1οΈβ£ Ease off the gas β don't slam the brakes or stomp the pedal. Sudden inputs make a skid worse.
2οΈβ£ Look where you want to go β not at what you're about to hit β and steer there smoothly.
3οΈβ£ If the back end slides out, gently steer in that same direction to catch it.
4οΈβ£ As grip returns, straighten out with slow, smooth corrections β no sudden jerks.
But the real secret? The best skid control is preventing the skid in the first place. Slow down for conditions, leave extra following distance, and keep every input gentle β easy on the gas, easy on the brake, easy on the wheel. Remember that bridges and shaded spots freeze first, even when the rest of the road looks clear.
Smooth and slow gets you home. π
