💡 CAN A CONSUMER PROPOSAL ACTUALLY HELP YOU GET APPROVED FOR A CAR LOAN?
Believe it or not — sometimes, yes.
I talk to people all the time who are terrified that filing a consumer proposal means they’ll never get approved for a vehicle again.
But here’s something most people don’t realize:
👉 In certain situations, a consumer proposal can actually make your application easier to work with than having the same debt WITHOUT a proposal.
Why?
If you’re carrying $30,000, $50,000 or even $80,000+ in unsecured debt, those monthly payments can crush your debt-service ratios.
Once you enter a consumer proposal, those debts may be consolidated into one structured monthly payment.
That can completely change the financial picture we’re presenting to an automotive lender.
There’s another important difference:
Uncontrolled debt creates uncertainty. A proposal creates a plan.
That DOES NOT mean having a consumer proposal automatically gets you approved. Your income, employment, payment history, down payment, existing obligations, previous auto history, stage of the proposal and the lender’s guidelines can all matter.
But I’ve worked with customers who assumed their proposal killed their chances — when it was actually the beginning of getting their finances back under control.
And there are lenders and programs specifically designed to consider customers dealing with:
✅ Active consumer proposals
✅ Recently completed proposals
✅ Bankruptcy
✅ Collections
✅ Previous credit problems
✅ Low credit scores
✅ New-to-Canada credit
✅ Other difficult credit situations
The biggest mistake is assuming you don’t qualify and never finding out.
