Padel is quickly gaining momentum in Canada as the fast-growing racquet sport continues to attract new players nationwide.

Originally invented in Mexico, padel combines elements of tennis and squash and is played in doubles on enclosed courts surrounded by walls. The sport has been growing steadily in Canada since 2020, with clubs now operating in cities like Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Edmonton. Canadian Padel Federation supporters say the game’s easy learning curve, social atmosphere, and fast-paced style are helping fuel its rise — with some even calling it the “sport of the summer.”

Tim Hortons says it wants to hire 10,000 new local workers as its reliance on temporary foreign workers continues to decline.

The coffee chain says about 4,000 of its 110,000 Canadian employees are currently hired through the Temporary Foreign Worker program, a number that has steadily decreased since 2024. Tim Hortons says it supported expanded access to the program during pandemic-era labour shortages, but now believes additional lobbying is unnecessary amid rising youth unemployment. The hiring push comes as the company plans to open 80 new restaurants across Canada and renovate hundreds more.

The World Health Organization says Congo’s Ebola outbreak is worsening rapidly and now poses a “very high” national risk.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have climbed to 82, with suspected infections and deaths continuing to rise sharply. Health officials warn the outbreak is spreading quickly, prompting the WHO to raise its national risk assessment while deploying emergency staff and millions of dollars in aid to help contain the virus. Uganda has also reported imported cases linked to the outbreak, though officials say measures there appear to be preventing wider spread for now.

Southern Ontario is in for a cold and soggy weekend, forcing at least one major Toronto event to be postponed.

Heavy rain and strong winds sweeping across the region led organizers to reschedule Bruno Mars’ concert at Rogers Stadium to May 31, citing safety concerns for fans and staff. Environment Canada says some areas could see up to 50 millimetres of rain this weekend, with chilly temperatures making it feel closer to 3 C in parts of the GTA. Officials are also warning residents to stay cautious around rivers and shorelines as water levels rise from the prolonged rainfall.

Prime Minister Mark Carney helped kick off Canada’s World Cup preparations by welcoming FIFA’s top official to Ottawa.

During a visit with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Carney appeared to become one of the first Canadian leaders to hold the FIFA World Cup trophy, which Canada will help host in 2026 alongside the United States and Mexico. Carney also announced a major investment in soccer across the country, including $755 million over five years to support youth programs, local organizations, and facility upgrades as Canada prepares for the global tournament.
