Forensic engineers put wheel separations at one to fifteen weeks after someone took that wheel off and put it back on.

Lug nuts don't grip the wheel. They stretch the studs, and that stretch is the only thing clamping the wheel to the hub. Rust on the hub face crushes down and the clamp disappears without the nut ever moving.

Clean the mounting face, torque in a star pattern, and re-torque after the first 50 to 100 km.

The numbers on your tire aren't a part number.

225/65R17 102H. 225 is the width in millimetres. 65 isn't a height — it's a percentage: the sidewall is 65% of the width, so the same 65 on a wider tire is a taller tire. R is radial. 17 is the wheel, in inches.

Then the two everyone skips: 102 is the load index — 850 kg on that one tire. H is the speed rating, 210 km/h. The first half decides if it fits. The last half decides if it's safe.

Three quarters of the space a tire takes up is air.

That trapped air makes buried tires rise back to the surface, which is why whole tires are banned from landfills and why a tire pile is almost impossible to put out. Alberta shreds them into playground surfaces, road base and roofing instead.

You already paid for it: $5 the day you bought the tire.

Winter tires don’t grip because of the tread. It’s the rubber

08/31/2026

Those little rubber hairs on new tires do absolutely nothing.

A tire is cured inside a steel mould, and the air trapped between the rubber and the steel has to escape. So the mould is drilled with hundreds of tiny vent holes. Rubber follows the air into every one, and hardens there.

They wear off in a week. The only thing they ever proved is that nobody had driven on them yet.

Winter tires aren't about snow. They're about 7°C.

Below that temperature, all-season rubber goes hard and stops conforming to the road — so it loses grip on dry pavement too, not just ice. Calgary's average September low is already 4°C, which means your morning commute is colder than all-seasons are built for.

BC highways require winter tires from October 1. And every year the first real snowfall books every tire shop in the city solid for two weeks.

The last week of September is the right week. We carry 26 brands across both shops, and most changeovers are done in 45–60 minutes.
