Health care has become a major issue in British Columbia’s upcoming provincial election, with political parties promising changes to address doctor shortages, emergency room closures and access to medical services.

More than 1.2 million British Columbians remain without a family doctor, despite recent efforts to improve health-care access. The B.C. NDP says it has connected 700,000 additional residents with family doctors or nurse practitioners over the past three years while expanding services and simplifying licensing for internationally trained physicians. Meanwhile, the B.C. Conservatives are promising to maintain universal, publicly funded health care and establish an expert commission to identify improvements within their first 100 days in office.

Four people were hospitalized, including three in critical condition, following a serious crash on the Coquihalla Highway north of Merritt, B.C., Saturday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the collision near Exit 315 at Helmer Road around 8:35 a.m. Paramedics treated four people at the scene, with three transported to hospital in critical condition, including two by air ambulance. A fourth person was hospitalized in stable condition. The crash forced the closure of a 30-kilometre stretch of the highway between Helmer Road and Merritt for more than six hours before reopening around 3:30 p.m.

A ransomware attack on Burnaby’s school district has exposed sensitive personal information, including student records, identification documents and confidential educational assessments.

The district confirmed that cybercriminals accessed its systems on Sept. 21 and copied files containing names, contact details, birth dates and other personal information. Some compromised records may also include immigration documents, student diagnoses, specialized learning needs and employee personnel information. Although officials say the most sensitive information remains secure and the overall impact is limited, Burnaby RCMP and B.C.’s privacy commissioner have been notified. Families are being encouraged to watch for suspicious messages and potential identity fraud, with fraud alert registration offered as a precaution.

British Columbia’s three main political party leaders faced off in their only televised election debate, clashing over taxes, government spending, election reform and the province’s future.

NDP Leader David Eby defended his decision to call a snap election, saying his government needed a stronger mandate to address economic challenges and U.S. tariff threats. Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson proposed tax cuts and economic growth to tackle B.C.’s projected $13.8-billion deficit, while Green Leader Emily Lowan pushed for proportional representation and electoral reform. Both opposition leaders criticized Eby’s record and questioned his government’s promises. The debate also featured recorded messages from CentreBC Leader Elenore Sturko and OneBC Leader Dallas Brodie, who outlined their parties’ priorities.
