Why are we suddenly seeing so many ceramic coatings failing prematurely?
This past week alone we had THREE vehicles in the shop with serious ceramic coating performance issues, contamination problems, or complete coating failure concerns.
One was the Porsche we previously posted about (not coated locally) that unfortunately had an extremely poor self levelling clear coat & ceramic coating installation. The coating failure and installation defects were severe enough that the vehicle will ultimately require repainting in order to properly repair the damage.
The other two vehicles were local vehicles we chose not to publicly post in order to avoid unnecessary drama. Both suffered from improper coating leveling, severe high spots, and ceramic coating residue left behind in factory badging and trim areas. In order to properly repair these vehicles, badging will need to be removed, the affected areas corrected and polished, and the emblems reinstalled or replaced.
The reality is this:
Ontario road salt and harsh winters do NOT normally destroy a properly installed professional-grade ceramic coating.
In our experience, the biggest causes of premature ceramic coating failure are usually:
✔ Poor preparation before installation
✔ Low-grade coating products
✔ Improper maintenance
✔ Contamination buildup
✔ Rushed installations
One of the biggest misconceptions we continue to see is people believing a coating is “gone” simply because water beading slows down. In many cases, heavily contaminated coatings can often be restored through proper decontamination and maintenance procedures.
We also continue to see confusion between true professional ceramic coatings and temporary “spray ceramic” products marketed with unrealistic durability claims.
This is exactly why we wrote our newest blog:
“Why Are We Seeing More Ceramic Coating Failures in Ontario?”
The article breaks down:
• What actually causes ceramic coating failure
• Why proper preparation matters so much
• The difference between contaminated vs failed coatings
• Why indoor curing still matters
• Why maintenance is critical in Ontario’s climate

The next messed up paint correction will be in over the weekend to be repaired and ceramic coated. The battle to have it fixed has been going on since October last year on a brand new truck. Stay tuned! Finally getting done and it is being paid for as well…
Since 2017, Scott’s Custom Auto Spa & Ceramic Coatings has focused on a correction-first approach, professional-grade ceramic coating systems, controlled installation procedures, and realistic long-term expectations for our clients.
