Post Three: Honda’s Sensing Suite - The Best Automotive Safety Feature Of Its Time? Written by; Kristina Pniewski, 200445437

In 2014, Honda Motors set out to unveil their all new safety feature - The Sensing Suit. The sensing suite was released in the early model 2015 CRV, and it included new safety features:

- Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
- Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
- Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM)
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

Since Honda’s unveiling of its newest safety features, it resulted in the expansion of its availability across Honda’s other makes and models within its lineup. Even going as far to offer several variations on specific trim levels, so that every customer's needs may be met. The suite is fully intended to enhance driver safety by incorporating technologies that aid the driver, and help avoid collisions or other avoidable instances that drivers may not be expecting. The Sensing Suite is best described as a second pair of eyes helping you safely get to your destinations.

Generally, the feedback from consumers over the ~10 or so years that the sensing suite has been in utilization has been quite positive. Many drivers have been said to appreciate the added safety features, and have spoken about the highly positive aspects. Unfortunately a few months ago, I myself was involved in a minor collision. Due to this my vehicle needed repairs, and I rented a Honda Civic for about two months. The vehicle I drove was an early 2021 and I believe was a LX model. It came equipped with all of Honda’s newest updated safety features, including the Sensing Suite.

My experience with this vehicle was quite pleasant, truthfully, it had saved me from a few close calls with their Collision Avoidance, and their Lane Keeping Assist System. After driving this vehicle for such a long period of time, I grew to admire the way the vehicle handled with the use of these features. Despite any hiccups that may have occurred, this rental had been a dream to drive in the safety aspect and after driving it for as long as I did, I can now truly say that the Honda Sensing Suite is a great safety feature. As the technology continues to evolve it will continue to grow into what I believe to be an important and beneficial safety feature. After my experience, for the first time in my life, I am actively considering purchasing a newer generation Honda, as I grew to love the Sensing Suite. In my opinion and with my experience driving a lot of vehicles, no other manufacturer is able to compete with Honda in this region. The Sensing Suite brings a new level of comfort to the way their vehicles drive and handle, and I truly can appreciate it.

During this generation of the Civic, a few engines were available such as the standard 1.2L 4 cylinder which was the base engine then you could upgrade to a slightly larger 1.3L then a 1.5. There were also CVCC engine options like the 1.3 and the 1.5. The base model for the Civic in those days was the DX, featuring basic options, available in both a sedan or a hatchback body style. The LX was the next trim level, offering better interior materials, more equipment and more creature comforts. Higher than the LX was the GL with a better audio system and even better interior materials. The “sport” version of the Civic in those days was the “S” model that featured sportier looks as well as an improved suspension. The Civic wagon was also available as well as the CVCC Civic that featured the infamous CVCC engine. You could now get the Civic with a 4 or 5 speed manual, a 2-speed Hondamatic automatic or a 3-speed automatic. While it kept the original recipe for what made the Civic so popular, it was greatly upgraded to more modern standards for those days.

“3 Honda Powertrain Advancements Throughout Civic Production”
By Ryan Richardson (200525405)
Blog #1

Introduction
- With the eleventh generation of Honda’s Civic coming to market in 2022, the revolutionary history of the “Best Compact Car” represents many superior engine and powertrain advancements that have been integrated throughout the years, proving consistency to incredibly efficient reliability. Advancements that Honda has implemented with the Civic’s engine can be represented in many key aspects. Variable Valve Timing with Lift Electronic Control, Dual Overhead Camshaft technologies and Direct Injection are a few of many aspects Honda as a company has been well known for perfecting within the production of not only the Civic, but other award winning vehicle’s.

Variable Valve Timing with Lift Electronic Control (VTEC)
-Introduced in 1989 and engineered for the release of the 1989 Acura Legend it wasn’t until 3 years of success in 1992 when Honda’s fifth generation Honda Civic acquired the engine to spark millions of enthusiasts. The B16A inline 4 cylinder offered in Honda’s 1992 Honda Civic Si was a 1.6 liter 16 valve producing approximately 125 horsepower. Honda’s release of their VTEC engine technology was nothing but an impressive accomplishment. The innovation of VTEC within the Honda Civic’s power plant reveals truly impressive performance and the mastered optimization of efficient power across all ranges of your driving experience making Honda’s Vtec the first commercially successful Variable Valve Timing and lift technology used in a production car.

Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC)
- During the early 90s time frame of Honda’s incredible Civic SI another innovative advancement was the use of Dual Overhead Camshafts. During the release of this innovation used in the 1992 SI, many cars in the same class as the Civic were sold with a standard 4 cylinder engine. With the standard 4 cylinder engine vehicle relying on a single overhead camshaft to operate the valves, Honda’s DOHC provides exact and precise control with your engine’s valve’s timing and lift. Honda’s groundbreaking innovation achieved much more efficient airflow and combustion along with enhancing the vehicle’s power responsiveness during all aspects of driving, especially in higher RPM’s.

Direct Injection
With Honda introducing Direct Injection to their lineup of vehicles in the mid-2000s the representation was a substantial step forward in the automotive industry. With traditional port fuel injection being offered in almost all vehicles in the Civic’s class it was in 2012 when Honda reshaped the engine's fuel process with their Direct Fuel Injection in their 2012 Honda Civic SI. Direct Injection not only offered precise combustion optimization but also allowed for a more fine air-fuel mixture and improved power responsiveness. Compared to other vehicles in the Civic’s class the 2012 Honda Civic SI featured a 2.4 liter I - Vtec Engine with Direct Injection. Honda’s Direct Injection technology reduced emissions and provided a much cleaner running engine. This technology also elevated Honda’s Civic Si power output solidifying Honda’s commitment to automotive excellence.

Post Two: The Fourth Generation Honda Civic By, Kristina Pniewski

The Fourth Generation Honda Civic was produced from 1987 until 1991, and reasonably has become viewed as a significant milestone in the evolution of the honda civic. The fourth generation honda civic has been characterized as the pivottable point honda became the most reliable, efficient and innovative motor company out there on the market at the time. Honda Motors, and more specifically the Honda Civic was at this time, the first generation to be introduced and released to a global market. The market at the time was: North America, Europe and parts of Asia. Another key point to make was at this time, as well as being offered globally, the fourth Generation was available in various body styles including: Sedan, Hatchback, Wagon and the CRX Coupe.

The CRX Coupe was a sport two-seater body style offered as a variant of the Fourth Generation Honda Civic. This variant of the Civic was a popular choice among Honda enthusiasts at the time and was viewed as capturing the hearts of them. The CRX combined the beloved reliability from the Civic but with a performance-oriented and a more stylish approach. With the redesign oriented to cater to more drivers seeking an engaging, efficient and (for the time marketed by Honda) a powerful vehicle, the CRX was quick to become a standout model within the civic lineup.

Introduced with a new design, the Fourth Generation Civic sported a newly refreshed interior that featured user-friendly features on their dash, and Honda used high-quality materials to create a high-end feeling. This generation of the Civic featured a sleeker profile, flush headlights and their redesign brought smoother body lines. All of these improvements lead to the realization that this generation was successfully viewed fulfilling their market request of the creation of the most fuel efficient and wind noise reduced compact model cars on the market at the time and aided honda in maintaining its market positioning by enhancing the appeal of their vehicles.

The Fourth Generation Civic was the point in evolution where Honda incorporated several key safety and technological innovations for not only their own advancement, but for the innovation of advancements in time. Honda introduced the Civic with a Anti-Lock Braking System(ABS), a Driver Side Airbag, and they transitioned from carburetors to electronic fuel injection. This Civic generation was a significant milestone in the history of the model as they managed to make lasting advancements in the design, performance and technology standards.

The First Generation Honda Civic

In 1972 Honda Motors unveiled their newest vehicle - the Honda Civic. When released, Honda made sure to recognize the functionality and straightforwardness of their design of this car, as they provided a surprisingly roomy interior and created an all around comfortable vehicle which made it quick to become a favorite among growing families. The first generation Honda Civic was described as a trailblazing vehicle in which it established the symbol of efficiency, reliability and innovation. Many of the early model Honda Civics are still held onto and cherished by collectors and enthusiasts today.

Now, you may be asking. How was the Honda Civic different from any other vehicle on the market at the time? Honda brought innovation in Environmental Awareness, Build Quality, Compact Design, Front Wheel Drive and Fuel Efficiency. During the 1970’s The Honda Civic at this time compared to its competitors was a great choice for people looking for a new vehicle as it brought a small, lightweight design and an efficient 1.2-liter engine that made it one of the most fuel efficient and economical choices on the market. This vehicle was the forefronting vehicle that pushed manufacturers to compete in the creation of the most “fuel efficient” vehicle, as Honda was able to properly expose a segment of the market that had never been reached before - those searching for a more economical choice in everyday transportation - but once Honda scratched the surface, the demand never diminished and the race for the lowest l/100km reading had begun.

Designed by Hiroshi Kizawa and Shinya Iwakura, the Honda Civic was assembled in Suzuka Mie Japan, Petone New Zealand, North Jakarta Indonesia, and Johor Bahru Malaysia. The Civic was released as just a Two or Four door fastback sedan in July of 1972. It was offered in a SB1, SE and SG Chassis, then followed later years of production which brought the Three or Five door hatchback offered in a SB1, SG and finally a Five door station wagon. The layout was a front-engine design with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) powertrain. Speaking of powertrains, this generation of Civic’s brought the E-series, which was an inline four-cylinder engine designed and built by Honda. These engines were recognizably the first time Honda was seen utilizing CVCC Technology, which more specifically was introduced in the ED1 engine in the 1975 manufacturing period of the Civic, which was due to the new regulations in the emission standards when catalytic converters were introduced.

8 Designs Influenced by the 1973 Oil Crisis.
Written by Kristina Pniewski on November 6th, 2023.

The 1973 oil crisis was a period of fuel shortages and an extremely high time for the price of oil, which was a direct result of the OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) oil embargo. Honda, a motor vehicle manufacturer saw a pivotal place in the market that needed addressing: the market was searching for an everyday, fuel-efficient vehicle that can get growing families from point a to b in a safe and quick manner. On July 11th, 1972, Honda answered the peoples request by unveiling the first-generation Honda Civic, which was at the time introduced as a two-door subcompact vehicle. This day marks the start of the Honda Civic’s successful and enduring legacy in the automotive industry.

Honda Motors was at the forefront of automobile design and technologies in the early years. They along with other automobile manufacturers such as Ford Motor Company and General Motor Company were at the forefront of the crucial years of design trial and error, and truly setting the stones for what we now know and recognize as the automotive industry today. Many technologies that came from this time period, and are still in utilization today, would be:
- The crucial period of designing compact and efficient engines.
-Aerodynamic Designs
-Brought increased fuel efficiency.
-Increased overall performance and power.
-Testing different lightweight materials
-CVCC (Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion) Engine Technology
-Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) Innovation
-Transmissions and Gearboxes
-CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
-Automatic and Manual Transmissions
-VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control)
-Improved engine efficiency and performance
-Optimizing airflow and fuel delivery
-Advanced manufacturing processes
-Robotics and animation
-Improved production efficiency and quality control
-Innovations within suspension and handling design research
-Improved handling and ride comfort
-Many important safety features were thought of and designed during this period

Honda Motors was also at the forefront of safety design and advancements in the early days. They visualized pioneering features such as airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), and advanced crash structure design software. Honda really focused on the clientele of who is buying, owning and driving their vehicles. As a manufacturing company, Honda truly realized that the product that they offer is typically bought and owned by young adults, teenagers, and young families. Honda’s marketing and research teams understood their persona and really designed their products around the wants and needs of their desired market, and thus resulting in the continued and still ever so advancing success of their vehicle models in multiple segmentations, sport, luxury and compact, resulting in continued successful attributions and recognition throughout almost every single new model release thus far.
