CAN-AM ATV Diagnostic Case StudyVehicle: 2020 Can-Am Outlander 850 XTCustomer Complaint:• Check Engine Light ON• Intermi...
20/05/2026

CAN-AM ATV Diagnostic Case Study
Vehicle: 2020 Can-Am Outlander 850 XT

Customer Complaint:
• Check Engine Light ON
• Intermittent hesitation during acceleration
• Reduced throttle response
• Engine occasionally entering limp mode after extended riding

Using TEXA IDC6 Powersports Diagnostics with the TXB2 interface, a complete system scan was performed.

Stored DTC: P0122 – Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Circuit Low Input

Live data analysis revealed:
• Inconsistent throttle position readings
• Desired vs actual throttle angle mismatch
• Intermittent voltage drop from TPS sensor
• Erratic throttle response during acceleration

Technician initially suspected:
• Faulty throttle position sensor
• Wiring harness issue
• Throttle body contamination
• ECU communication issue

Diagnostic Process:
Using TEXA IDC6 live data and activations, the following tests were performed:
✔ TPS voltage monitoring
✔ Throttle sweep testing
✔ Wiring harness movement test
✔ Connector pin drag inspection
✔ Throttle body inspection
✔ Desired vs actual throttle comparison
✔ Live data monitoring under load

Root Cause Found:
Moisture intrusion and corrosion inside the TPS connector created intermittent signal loss, causing unstable throttle position readings and improper throttle control calculations.

As riding time increased:
• Sensor voltage became unstable
• Throttle response became inconsistent
• ECU protection strategies activated
• Limp mode conditions occurred intermittently

Repair Performed:
• Repaired damaged connector terminals
• Cleaned corrosion from connector pins
• Applied dielectric protection
• Cleared DTCs
• Performed throttle adaptation reset
• Verified stable TPS readings during extended operation

Final Result:
✔ Stable throttle response restored
✔ Proper acceleration returned
✔ No further limp mode events
✔ Desired and actual throttle values normalized
✔ DTC P0122 did not return after testing

Key Takeaway:
Many throttle-related DTCs on modern ATV systems are not always caused by failed sensors. Connector integrity, moisture intrusion, and live data analysis are critical during accurate diagnostics.

Advanced diagnostics platforms like TEXA IDC6 allow technicians to analyze real-time sensor behavior and diagnose intermittent performance issues more efficiently.

Diagnostic Case Study – 2022 Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 850 E-TEC

Customer complaint: Intermittent limp mode
Loss of throttle response
Random stalling after hard acceleration
Restarted normally after key cycle

DTCs Retrieved:
P1228 – Electronic Throttle Control Fault
P0191 – Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Performance
U0122 – Communication Loss

Initial assumptions pointed toward:
Faulty throttle body
Fuel pressure issue
ECM or CAN communication failure

After multiple tests and component inspections, the issue still returned only under load and at operating temperature.

Using live data recording during loaded operation with the TEXA IDC6 platform, technicians discovered:
Fuel pressure dropping intermittently
TPS signals becoming unstable
Multiple modules briefly losing communication

The actual root cause was NOT:
Fuel pump
ECM
Throttle body

Final Root Cause:

A partially chafed 5V reference wire from the ECU hidden inside the factory harness near the magneto cover.

Under engine vibration and heat, the harness intermittently grounded against the engine casing causing:

False sensor readings
CAN communication faults
Limp mode activation
Multiple misleading DTCs

Final Repair:
Opened harness loom
Repaired damaged 5V reference wire
Repositioned harness
Added abrasion protection
Completed extended loaded trail test successfully

On modern Ski-Doo E-TEC systems, one unstable 5V reference circuit can create multiple unrelated faults and lead technicians in the wrong direction.

This is why live data analysis, loaded testing, and advanced electrical diagnostics are critical on today’s powersports platforms.
