📘 Biz Terms 101 – Target Market

A target market is usually shaped by a combination of factors:
• Demographics: age, location, income level, family situation
• Interests and values: what matters to them, what they spend money on
• Behaviour: how they find businesses, how they make purchasing decisions
• Need: what problem or gap your product or service addresses for them

Every business has a target market, whether they know it or not. It is the group of people most likely to want what you are offering. Getting clear on who they are helps you make better decisions about pricing, marketing, and where to focus your energy.

Here are some ways to start identifying yours:
• Think about who already buys from you or who you'd most like to serve.
• Look at who engages with your social media or asks about your services.
• Research who your competitors are targeting and whether there is a gap you could fill.
• Geographic limitations, ie. small rural population

Understanding your target market is one of the most practical tools any new or growing business can develop, and it is worth revisiting as your business evolves.

📣 Mama'omas Community Update: Summer Halibut Harvest

This summer, the Summer Only set out to sea and over six days on the water, our dedicated crew brought in over 1,600 lbs of fresh halibut for our community to enjoy. 🎣 More than 160 community members received halibut across two deliveries.

The good news doesn't stop there, salmon season is here! Stay tuned to announcements from 'Namgis First Nation for distribution announcements. 🌊

A heartfelt thank you to every crew member, your hard work feeds our community and it does not go unnoticed.

🌿 Meet the Team – Jonathan Lok, RFT, Board Member, 'Na̱mg̱is Business Development Corp. | CEO, Atli Resources

Jon Lok, Atli Resources CEO, serves as a Director on the NBDC Board, bringing his forestry sector and board governance expertise directly to the organization.

Jon has lived in Port McNeill for nearly 40 years and began his forestry career on Northern Vancouver Island with companies like Canfor, TimberWest, Weyerhaeuser and Canadian Air Crane, and went on to co-found Strategic Natural Resource Consultants, one of the larger resource management consultancies in BC, where he served as Managing Director, responsible for setting strategy, growing culture, and building a world-class team. The firm was named one of the Top 100 Employers in Canada.

Jon studied at SFU, BCIT and UBC Sauder School of Business, and has been recognized as ABCFP's Forest Technologist of the Year, received the CIF's James Kitz Award, and was named one of Canada's Top 20 Under 40 in the forest sector by Canadian Forest Industries Magazine.

He has served as President of the Consulting Foresters of BC, the Association of BC Forest Professionals, the Canadian Institute of Forestry, and the North Island Community Forest, expertise he now brings straight to NBDC's forestry and industrial businesses.

NBDC is grateful for Jon's leadership and industry expertise across the organization.
