With school letting out for the summer, the rhythm of neighbourhoods changes fast and your driving habits need to adjust also. 🚗

Kids are out of their usual routines, which means they are less predictable on the roads. They're on bikes, on foot, chasing each other between yards and not always watching for traffic, slowing down makes a real difference.

A few things to keep in mind as summer gets underway:
• Playground zone speed limits of 30 km/h are in effect when children are present, including on weekends. Through the summer months always assume kids are present
• Watch for kids on bikes darting out from driveways and between parked cars
• Be especially alert in the early afternoon when younger kids are most active outside
• Give yourself extra stopping distance, summer means more pedestrians at every age

Stay safe out there this summer, from all of us at North Island Driving School. ☀️

📋 New at North Island Driving School: The Student Driver Report Card

Whether you're a parent or guardian wanting to stay informed, a student tracking your own progress, or an organization supporting a learner, our new Report Card service gives you a clear written summary of where a student actually stands, no guesswork required!

Each report includes:
• A 24-skill driving assessment rated as Not Introduced, In Progress, or Competent
• An exam-readiness indicator
• Instructor comments and recommended areas for continued practice
• A grant or program reporting section for supporting organizations where applicable

The Report Card is prepared by our administrative team using lesson notes already on file, so no additional lesson time is needed. It is a flat $75 plus applicable taxes, with a standard turnaround of 5–10 business days.

It is worth noting that the Report Card is a progress tool – an honest snapshot of skills built and work still ahead. It is not a prediction of ICBC road test results, which depend on many factors including practice time and conditions on the day of the exam. 🚗

✅ Amanda's Tip: Don't let your shoulder check cost you your N.

One of the biggest reasons new drivers don’t pass their N is missing proper shoulder checks. A quick glance isn’t enough, ICBC examiners are looking for a full shoulder and head turn so you can actually see into your blind spot. Mirrors don’t show everything, and shoulder checks fill that gap. 🚗

Remember to deep shoulder check:
• Before changing lanes
• Before pulling away from a curb
• Before turning
• Before merging
• Before opening your door

Missing one can count as a critical error on your road test. The good news? With practice, shoulder checks quickly become second nature. 💪

**Bonus Tip: Always remember to turn and look fully behind you before reversing. ✅

If you’re preparing for your N, we can help build the habits examiners are looking for.

☀️🏕 May long weekend (Victoria Day Weekend) marks the start of camping and backroad season on the North Island. 🌲

If you’re heading onto logging or gravel roads this weekend, the most important things to be aware of are that:
• You may be sharing the road with active logging trucks and
• These roads handle very differently than pavement

A few key tips:
• Slow down more than you think you need to
• Brake early and gently
• Leave lots of following distance
• Pull right when visibility drops from dust
• Logging trucks always have the right of way
• Download maps before you go – service disappears fast 📵

After your trip:
• Check tires for damage or embedded rocks
• Look for windshield chips
• Clear debris from under the vehicle

Drive safe and enjoy the long weekend. 🚗

🌎 Earth Month reminder: carpooling is one simple way to reduce emissions, save fuel, and lower travel costs. Fewer vehicles on the road means less congestion and a lighter footprint for our communities. 🚗🌲

But!
If you are a new driver, it is important to understand passenger rules before offering rides. In British Columbia:

• L (Learner) drivers must be accompanied by a qualified supervisor aged 25+ and can only have one additional passenger.
• N (Novice) drivers are limited to one passenger unless immediate family members are in the vehicle.

These rules are designed to reduce distractions and help new drivers build experience safely. Carpooling is a great goal, but safety and legal limits come first.

As you gain experience and move through the licensing stages, you will have more flexibility to share rides responsibly.

🌎 April is Earth Month 🌿

Driving is part of daily life on the North Island for many people, but how we drive makes a real difference. Smart driving habits protect the environment, improve road safety, and save you money over time.

Here are a few simple ways to drive greener:

• Avoid unnecessary idling
• Accelerate smoothly and maintain steady speeds
• Stay within posted speed limits to reduce fuel use
• Keep tires properly inflated
• Keep up with regular maintenance to improve efficiency and prevent leaks

A well-maintained vehicle uses fuel more efficiently, lasts longer, and improves safety. Small changes behind the wheel can lower emissions and help protect the land and waterways we all share.🌲🚗
