According to the white lady: I donβt normally post things like this. But this one has hit very close to home & honestly has made me so upset and angry. π‘
This is Arnold Sodinga.
Arnold has worked for my family for almost 30 years. He is one of the kindest, most honest, hardworking men I know. The kind of person who quietly shows up everyday, works hard, asks for very little, and simply dreamed of retiring peacefully in his own home.
In 2008, Arnold and his wife took out a home loan with Standard Bank - South Africa for R48,000 to buy a small house to retire in.
Years ago, Arnold fell behind on some payments and came to my father terrified that he was going to lose his house.
My father stepped in, contacted the bank, settled the arrears, and from that point made sure every single payment was paid on time.
Not one payment was missed again for almost 10 years.
In fact, Arnold even started paying EXTRA every month to try pay the house off sooner.
Over the years, more than R138,000 was paid to Standard Bank after the account was brought up to date.
So imagine the shock when my father recently contacted the bank assuming the house must surely almost be paid offβ¦
β¦only to be told Arnold STILL owes over R55,000.
More than the original loan amount.
At 60 years old.
After already paying back more than THREE TIMES the original loan.
If Arnold continues paying at the current rate, Standard Bank stands to receive over R338,000 in total⦠on a R48,000 loan.
The matter has now been referred to the Ombudsman for investigation.
But honestly, this isnβt just about numbers anymore.
This is a real human being.
A gentle, hardworking man who did everything he could to keep his little home.
A man who trusted the system.
A man who should be preparing to retire with dignity⦠not wondering if he could still lose his house after paying for nearly two decades.
I understand loans and interest are complicated.
But somewhere along the line, humanity also has to matter.
Because this just doesnβt feel right.
If this post reaches the right people, maybe Arnold finally gets the answers and help he deserves.

I really want to help Arnold π
