When you’re stopped at a light, your engine is still running — but the vehicle isn’t moving. So how does an automatic car go from sitting still to rolling forward without stalling?
It’s all thanks to the torque converter. The engine spins the converter’s pump, which moves fluid and transfers that energy to the turbine connected to the transmission. At low speed, the converter slips just enough to let the engine idle. As you press the accelerator, fluid flow increases, the turbine starts turning, and the vehicle begins to move. The stator inside redirects the fluid to give extra torque during take off, making the launch smooth and powerful.
