🔧 AUTOMOTIVE TIP TUESDAY

THAT NOISE MIGHT NOT BE YOUR ALTERNATOR.

A worn belt tensioner or tensioner pulley can squeal, rattle or vibrate — making it sound like the alternator is failing.

If the tensioner can’t maintain proper belt tension, the belt can slip and affect alternator output.

Before replacing the alternator, check the belt, tensioner and pulleys.

Don’t replace a part just because the noise sounds like it’s coming from there.

CAN SPEEDING THROUGH WATER DAMAGE YOUR STARTER OR ALTERNATOR? 🤔

Yes. Doing so increases the chance of water reaching the starter, alternator and electrical connections, which may lead to starting or charging problems.

If you cannot judge the depth of the water, turn around—do not drive through it.

🔧 AUTOMOTIVE TIP TUESDAY

You’re stuck in back-to-school traffic when you hear a strange noise under the hood. 😩

Sometimes the alternator isn’t the problem—the belt is.

When I inspected this vehicle, I found that the belt had been installed incorrectly and was not seated properly on the alternator pulley. This can cause slipping, noise, premature belt wear, and charging problems.

Before replacing the alternator, check the belt’s routing, alignment, condition, and tension.
