The return of the Toyota MR2 is looking more real than ever. A heavily camouflaged development prototype has been spotted lapping Fuji Speedway in Japan, giving enthusiasts their clearest look yet at what could become Toyota’s next iconic mid-engine sports car.

Although the prototype wears modified GR Yaris body panels, it hides a completely different layout underneath. Like previous development mules, the car features a mid-engine, all-wheel-drive configuration, complete with large side air intakes and a stretched wheelbase to accommodate the powertrain. Toyota engineers have previously revealed that more than 20 development prototypes are planned before the production model is ready, showing just how serious the company is about perfecting the car.

The biggest talking point, however, is the engine. Earlier prototypes used the familiar 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder, but the latest spy footage suggests Toyota may have switched to its new 2.0-litre turbocharged G20E four-cylinder, an engine expected to produce around 400 hp in road-going form.

Toyota has yet to officially confirm whether the production car will revive the MR2 nameplate, but with every new prototype, that long-awaited comeback feels closer than ever. If all goes according to plan, enthusiasts could soon have another lightweight Japanese sports car to get excited about.
