In 1956, Mercedes-Benz went to work developing a new limousine to replace the 300 Adenauer series. After years of development and research the 600 was unvieled in 1963. The 600 was the wold’s best and most up-to-date limousine at the time. 2 meters wide and 5.54 meters long, this vehicle was equiped with the most ingenious technology: air suspension, automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. Supreme comfort was also available, thanks to a hydraulic system with 175 atmospheres of pressure that operated the central locking, windows, sunroof, closable doors, seats, heating and ventilation, and the opening and closing of the trunk lid. There was also a new engine beneath the hood, a 6.3l V8 with 250hp of power capable of accelerating the 2.5 ton flagship to speeds of 205 km/h.
Customers that where seeking for more room could opt for the 600 pullman which, at a length of 6,24 meters, had a wheelbase 70 centimeters longer. Of the 2677 W100 models built, 428 were ordered as pullman limousines, and 59 as Landaulet which has a hydraulic operated sunroof.
