When the Jaguar XJ40 arrived in 1986, it marked one of the most important departures in Jaguar’s history.

After years of development, it replaced the Series III with a car that was fundamentally more modern. New platform, new electronics, and a completely rethought approach to refinement and packaging.
At its core was the AJ6 straight-six, an engine designed for smoother delivery, improved efficiency, and long-distance durability. It gave the XJ40 a more contemporary character while retaining the quiet, effortless performance expected of a Jaguar saloon.

The engineering focus went deeper than many realised. Digital instrumentation, onboard diagnostics, and advanced electrical systems were introduced at a level Jaguar had not attempted before. It was a clear move toward a more technology-led future.

This was not just progress for the sake of it. The XJ40 improved structural rigidity, interior space, and ride consistency, while still maintaining the balance between comfort and control that defined the XJ line.

What often gets overlooked is how significant the XJ40 was in shaping what followed. It laid the groundwork for the X300 that refined it, and ultimately for the modern Jaguars that came after.
Today, the best XJ40s are not the ones that have been hidden away. They are the ones that have been properly maintained, where the engineering still works as intended and the car delivers the quiet competence it was designed for.
