Exciting update! 📸 My partnership with skeyes takes flight again! ✈️ I’m thrilled to announce that, after a competitive tender process following the end of my previous contract, I’ve been selected once again to partner with skeyes, the guardian of air traffic safety in Belgium.

After four enriching years as their freelance corporate photographer, capturing the precision and dedication behind air traffic management, I’ve been granted the opportunity to extend this partnership for four more years.

Winning the recent tender is not just a professional milestone but a testament to the trust and collaborative spirit we've built. I'm deeply grateful to skeyes for this renewed faith in my work and to my network for your constant support.

Looking forward to more moments of creativity and storytelling in the skies!

During the COVID-19 crisis, airlines were flying with empty airplanes to not lose airport slots. On the left, Brussels Airport's Mode S radar.

A Mode S radar is a surveillance method where the aircraft spontaneously 'cooperates' by transmitting data without being requested to do so, contributing to more effective air traffic control when combined with other systems, contrary to a primary radar that works the old way by reflecting signals off the aircraft.

Additional information about the capabilities and information provided by Mode S radar:

– Aircraft identity: Mode S radar receives detailed information about an aircraft's specific identity, distinguishing it from other aircraft in the vicinity.
– Altitude information: The system receives precise altitude data from the aircraft, allowing for better management of air traffic vertical separation.
– Flight path details: Information on the aircraft's flight path, including heading and speed, is transmitted, aiding in route planning and collision avoidance.
– Enhanced surveillance: Combines with ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) for comprehensive surveillance, significantly improving airspace safety and efficiency.
– Real-time data exchange: Provides real-time information exchange between the aircraft and ground control, enhancing situational awareness and operational efficiency.
– Direct aircraft cooperation: Unlike primary radar, which passively detects objects by reflecting radio waves, Mode S requires active cooperation from the aircraft, which 'spontaneously' transmits its data.
– Digital signal processing: Utilizes advanced digital signal processing to filter noise and extract useful information, even in high-traffic areas.

Four and a half years ago, I published this video showcasing a moment of extraordinary beauty captured with an HD camera (1920 x 1080 px). However, I had to crop the footage to enhance its aesthetic appeal, but that process made the images slightly blurry. Over the years, technology has advanced, and we now have software capable of improving sharpness, cleaning, and stabilising videos. The conversion from HD to 4K is impressive. I invite you to revisit this moment, which should be viewed on a large screen to fully appreciate the details.

In the background, Brussels Airport's control tower. After a wait of at least 15 minutes, during which it did not blink an eye, the grey heron was finally cleared for takeoff.

I began my journey in aviation photography with still photos, but it was clear that exploring videography was a necessary step. Here's a collection of my finest shots ‘Around Brussels Airport’, complemented beautifully by Kevin Graham's wonderful music. Enjoy!
Hey skeyes, of course you're in too ;-)

Wait! Yet, as we admire these stunning sceneries, it’s essential to acknowledge a hidden truth: these images are not real. Crafted by the intricate algorithms of the Midjourney AI, they stand as testaments to technology’s ability to mimic and even enhance reality. While they capture our imagination and feed our passion for aviation, they also bring forth an important conversation about authenticity in photography.

The dedication of these photographers, waiting for the perfect shot, is now overshadowed by technology’s ability to generate flawless, yet artificial, scenes. This raises concerns about the future of authentic photography in aviation. As AI advances, the unique artistry and authenticity of real photographers are at risk. The skill and patience involved in capturing genuine moments are threatened, perhaps even doomed, by these emerging technologies.

As we stand at this crossroads, it’s vital to recognise the value of real, human-captured photography. The true essence of aviation’s beauty lies in its unpredictability and imperfections, something AI can never truly replicate. Let’s continue to support and cherish the irreplaceable work of real photographers, even in an era where technology challenges their craft.
