Sindh has approved the procurement of 500 electric buses to strengthen public transport in two major cities of the province, marking a significant step improve urban transport systems in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur.

The decision was taken in a board meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, with senior officials including the transport secretary, SMTA management, and traffic police representatives in attendance.

Under a public-private partnership model, 500 electric buses will be introduced, with 450 allocated for 25 routes in Karachi and 50 for five routes in Hyderabad.

The government also plans to establish five electric vehicle depots, four in Karachi and one in Hyderabad, while extending the EV bus service to Sukkur in the next phase.

The board also approved 50 additional double-decker buses for Karachi, each with a capacity of 126 passengers, aimed at reducing pressure on the city’s public transport system.

To address freight movement, a dedicated heavy-vehicle terminal will be constructed in Karachi along with a separate track from Karachi Port to the facility to ease traffic congestion in the city.

In another key step, SMTA decided to launch an electric taxi service in Karachi, with financial evaluation to begin this month to speed up implementation.

The meeting also approved 500 electric scooties for women, with a new batch of pink scooties set to be distributed in Hyderabad on Friday.
