The government plans to ban battery powered and electric autorickshaws from Dhaka’s main roads. Only e-rickshaws carrying up to four passengers will be registered for operation on internal roads, while six passenger models will not be eligible for registration.

This information was revealed to the press by State Minister Mir Shahe Alam on Sunday August 30, following a meeting at the Secretariat between Local Government Minister Dr. Abdul Moin Khan and Malaysian High Commissioner Mohammad Suhada Osman.

An IUB BBA student went missing after being swept away by a strong current while bathing at Cox’s Bazar beach yesterday afternoon. Mohammad Ibrahim, 23, was among five tourists from Dhaka who entered the water near Jaltarang Point despite a red-flag warning indicating dangerous conditions. Three members of the group managed to reach the shore, while Ibrahim and fellow tourist Yasir Khan were swept into a depression in the water. Lifeguards rescued Yasir in critical condition, but he was later pronounced dead at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Fire Service and Sea-Safe lifeguards continued searching for Ibrahim, who remained missing.

The death toll from devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to at least 362, while rescuers continue searching for more than 1,400 missing people, including hundreds of foreign tourists and pilgrims. According to the US Geological Survey, a glacial collapse triggered the tsunami-like flow of icy water, mud and debris that swept away villages, homes, bridges and vehicles. Emergency teams are working across the affected areas as authorities warn that debris blocking an upstream river could trigger another flood.

A 24-year-old Nepali labourer survived a deadly flash flood after a mango tree stopped him from being swept to his death. Bibek Kumal was caught in a powerful torrent of water, mud and rocks while working in Bidur, downstream from the worst-hit Rasuwa district near Nepal’s border with Tibet. The floodwaters carried Kumal downstream before he became trapped in the mango tree, which he credited with saving his life. “Had there been no mango tree, I would have been washed away to death,” he said from his hospital bed at Kathmandu’s National Trauma Centre.
