While we’ve been waiting on the chassis for the Panel van, the owner has made the wise decision to fit air conditioning to the car, a must here in Central Queensland! So we made up this heater box delete panel and welded it into the car.
It was a tricky process as we didn’t want to burn or damage any of the new paint.
Our aim was to make the firewall look as if it could have come this way from the factory.

Thank you for the overwhelmingly positive comments. We’ve had a bunch of questions about this panel. Rather than answer them individually we thought it would be easier to make another post.

This panel was formed from flat sheet metal. It took 8 individually shaped pieces welded together, as it could have been done in one piece it would have taken a lot longer and would have been a lot more difficult to complete.

Majority of the panel was shaped using hand tools, however a combination of the shrinker/stretcher, English wheel, mini power hammer and magnabend was also used.

The whole process has well over 100 hours to get to this stage, however that includes planning, making templates and patterns, along with removal of the old quarter and clean up of the inner structure to keep the car tidy while we work on it. The templates and hammer form for the marker light we now have forever so the time on the next quarter will be reduced.

Some people believe we have already welded the quarter back onto the car without repairing the inner structure. The quarter panel is only sitting on the car to check fitment. Before it is welded on, the car will be stripped down completely, both quarters, turret, sills and cowl will be removed before we send the car off to be sand blasted. Once all of the rust is repaired, it will then go back together for good.

This car has seen some fire damage, however the whole car hasn’t been on fire. It still has a lot of the original paint and primer. The floor pans on this car are quite solid. All of the fire damaged parts of this car will be unpicked and replaced.

There aren’t many of these cars left so we believe it is worth trying to save them. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

We hope this post answers all of your questions, thank you again for your support.

We just finished making a quarter panel for this HQ Monaro. Can’t wait to bring this car back from the dead!
