While diagnosing this 2013 Hilux, I wanted to see if it had been tuned — or if there was anything limiting performance. The customer had just picked it up. Car looks spotless and pulls well. I pulled up the injection volume readings and found 107 mm³ — which is way above stock. For a Hilux, I usually expect between 72–77 mm³. If it was a Prado, we’d be looking at 90–92 mm³. So 107? It’s tuned. No question.
But here’s the kicker — if I was seeing low power and the volume reading was around 40, I wouldn’t be calling it mechanical right away. That tells me the ECU is pulling fuel.
Why? Could be MAF or MAP sensor readings telling the ECU there’s not enough air. That triggers emissions-based limits in the ECU, and it just doesn’t bother injecting more fuel.
Other times, the ECU tries to inject fuel, but the motor can’t deliver the power. That’s your mechanical fault — injectors, compression, whatever.
The injection volume tells you which path to go down.
Sensor fault? Or actual hardware issue?
In this case, I also checked the rail pressure — and it looked stock. So the injection map’s been touched, but not the fuel pressure side.
Always pull the numbers first. Don’t guess your way through low power issues.
