🚨 ELECTRIC VEHICLE VS. THE SALT FLATS: A good deed gone wrong at Gunpoint Beach! ⚡🔌
This legend went out with the best intentions to rescue another HiLux bogged down on the Gunpoint salt flats. Unfortunately, the flats claimed a second victim—and this one had a costly twist.
Because this was an electric vehicle, getting stuck in the soft mud caused the computer system to lock up. Stuck hard in gear and unable to move, the incoming tide completely submerged the rig before it could be freed. By the time we got the call at NT Towing & 4x4 Recovery Specialists, the rising water had done its worst, sadly turning this modern EV into a total write-off salvage job.
It breaks our heart to see a recovery end like this, especially when someone was just trying to help out a mate.
⚠️ The Salt Flat & EV Survival Guide:
• EV Electronics & Water Don't Mix: If an EV gets stuck in a high-risk tidal zone or salt flat, software locks or transmission errors can happen fast. If the vehicle gets stuck in gear, conventional recovery becomes a major challenge.
• The Gunpoint Salt Flats Are Deceptive: What looks like a hard crust can instantly turn into bottomless soup underneath, especially when a heavy vehicle sits stationary.
• Call for Backup Early: If a rescue starts going sideways on a tidal flat, do not wait. The Top End tides rise fast and aggressively.
